    Chapter One

This was not how things were supposed to happen. Mykala Brach wiped her forehead with her arm and blinked at her cell phone screen.

Are you sure? She texted through her phone.

We found the body, Mykala. I'm so sorry.

Tears filled her eyes as the phone shook in her hand. Damn bear shifters. First they killed her mother, now her father. Those savages had no respect for life. She was going to make them pay for this. She was going to make them hurt just as much as she did.

Did you get any names? she texted.

Only one, the hunter responded. Nathan.

Well, her father’s hired thugs did one thing right. If they couldn’t keep her father safe, at least they got the name of his killer.

Nathan. The name sounded familiar. Her father had said someone named Nathan was the leader of the bear pack that lived on the reservation next to the ski lodge. The pack had been terrorizing her father and the other guests. He had tried to go to local law enforcement, but the shifters were protected under some arcane law. They were untouchable. That was when he had called her in to help.

She had wanted to bring the rest of her team, but he had refused. According to him, this was a family affair. He had hired local hunters to take care of it, but they needed a leader, someone with experience in hunting shifters. That was why he had called her.

She suspected his reluctance to work with her team had more to do with his hatred for her boyfriend, Drax, than wanting to keep things local. From day one those two had never gotten along. Still, she honored her father’s wishes and came alone. Now she wished she hadn’t. Drax wouldn’t have let this happen. He would have kept her father alive.

She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand and began texting once more. Gather everyone and bring my father's body back to his lodge. I’ll meet you there.

    Yes, sir.

Mykala shut off her phone and loaded up her rifle with the last cartridge of neutralization serum in her supply pack. The serum had been designed by her friend Holly to lock a shifter in their human form for a short period of time. With their magic no longer working, those stupid bear shifters could no longer call upon their super strength or regenerate. The effects only lasted a couple of weeks, which was plenty of time to end their pathetic lives.

I'm coming after you, Nathan, and I'm going to show you just as much mercy as you showed my father.

Her father had told her that the bear shifters had their camp somewhere deep inside the conservation land that bordered her father’s property. Thanks to an incident a few decades ago, local law enforcement protected not only the animals but the Natives who had taken up local residence there. Hunting on the reservation land was strictly prohibited. Which meant that she would have to be extra careful not to get caught.

Strapping her rifle onto her back, she climbed over the fence that separated the ski lodge from the animal sanctuary and made her way over the snow to the thick woods beyond. As she walked, she kept her senses alert. She knew from experience that shifters liked to sneak up on people.

It was hard to imagine that her life had ended up like this. It all started a decade ago when she came home from school to find her father crying over her mother's torn and bloodied body. When the shock finally wore off, she learned that a bear shifter had stumbled upon her mother gardening in the back yard. Seeing her
