Knox Goodman opened his eyes and groaned as the room around him came into focus. Damn, he had a killer headache.

He's awake. The female voice sounded familiar, but he couldn't quite place it.

It's about time. A dark man's face came into view. He rubbed his hand over his cleanly-shaved head and frowned at Knox. Do you think the drug damaged his brain?

No, it doesn't work like that. It was just supposed to make him woozy for a little bit. I must have overestimated his size and gave him too much. That was why he was out for so long. An Asian woman's face came into view. She smiled and ran her long, manicured fingers down the side of his cheek. Welcome back, tiger.

I’m a bear. His response caused the two people standing over him to erupt in laughter.

Oh honey, we know. The Asian woman patted his hand. We know.

Slowly Knox's memories started to come back. He had run away from Mykala after a night of amazing sex because he had lost control of his animal side and had been too rough with her. He hid out in a local bar to drink away his memories and met the Asian woman, who had slipped something in his beer. When Knox tried to escape, she and this other dude had shoved him into a car.

What did you do to me? He tried to sit up but realized he couldn't move his arms. Glancing down, he saw that he was strapped to some sort of makeshift dentist chair with steel bands. He pulled against his bindings, but it was no use. He was stuck.

Sorry about that, the woman said as she fingered the metal. But the restraints are necessary. Can't have you going all bear on us. She made air-quotes around the word ‘bear’ and smirked.

What do you want with me, Lei?

Her smirk softened. Ah, you remember my name. How sweet. She nodded to the man next to her. This is Asante. Elina and Holly are in the next room preparing.

Preparing for what?

For our testing.

Knox frowned. His head felt as if it was stuffed with cotton. Testing? What testing?

Lei and Asante exchanged a look. You’re lucky, Asante said. Normally we kill the shifters we encounter.

But you. Lei touched his nose with her index finger. You, we decided to save.

Knox swallowed the impulse to growl. Why me?

Asante grinned. You have been chosen by our leader to be his wedding gift.

What the hell are you talking about?

Lei crossed her arms. Judging by the look on her face, she was starting to lose patience. You toyed with Drax’s fiancée, so he’s going to make an example of you.

Knox shook his head. You’re both crazy. I didn’t do anything with anyone.

Asante snorted. He wants us to believe that he didn’t try to fuck Mykala.

Lei made a tsking noise and shook her head. Stupid shifter. Didn’t you know we’d be watching?

Mykala? Knox tried to sit up, but then remembered that he had been restrained. What have you done to her?
