About this ebook

True health and happiness are achieved by growing physically stronger, intellectually more competent, and emotionally more balanced every day. This book provides, in the course of a single day's instructions, precisely what to do to attain and maintain that state of being. There is no lasting success without all three aspects in balance in our lives simultaneously. They cannot be separated. Any philosophy that suggests that one alone can bring success is a false prophesy.

For most people, life is analogous to a person sitting on a stool with one leg; we keep being buffeted by the winds of materialism, externality, and physical temptations. But rather than grow more legs under our stool, we just keep getting up and resetting It, somehow convincing ourselves, hoping, believing that the winds will blow no more.

Personal relationships, exercise, relating to others in a meaningful way, creative work, continuing education, interaction with nature, developing our inner self or spiritual nature . . .all of these represent legs for our stools.  The Perfect Day will show you how to build those legs and how to strengthen them every day.  The winds of change will no longer buffet you and knock your life out of control.

Jeffry Weiss

BIOGRAPHY Mr. Weiss attended Central High School, at the time recognized as the top High School academically in the U.S.  He then attended Drexel University where he gained a BS in History, Temple University where he earned an MA in Economics and the University of Pennsylvania where he received an MA in International Affairs.  Those studies provided him with unique insights in the realm of foreign policy, military capabilities, détente, and trade. He has been a writer for forty plus years and has penned hundreds of articles on social, political, and economic issues.  He has written position papers for the Carter and Clinton Administrations and his work on social issues has received recognition directly from the office of the President of México.  He speaks regularly with Noam Chomsky on political, economic, cultural, and military issues. Mr. Weiss writes political, military, economic and scientific thrillers.  There are now twelve books in the Paul Decker series.  All his stories come right off the front pages of the major magazines and newspapers but none of his plots has ever found their way into novel before.  His characters are ones readers can relate to: flawed, not superheroes.  His stories do not require a leap of faith or use deus ex machina. Finally, he has written a stage play, “Einstein at the Guten Zeiten (good times) Beer Garden, and an urban horror novel: “The Art of Theft”, a modern day version of “The Picture of Dorian Grey” by Oscar Wilde.

    FORWARD

You look older than your years . You're exhausted after walking up two flights of stairs. You don't have the energy to play with your children or run with your dog on the weekends. You can't control the thoughts that enter into your mind, or even regulate your breath. Your job means everything to you yet provides no benefit beyond the ability to pay the bills.

Each day's stress pushes you to the limits of human endurance; you can feel your heart palpitating, your health ebbing. You thought following the path of others was the way out, but now you feel trapped. Well, there is a way out. And it is laid out before you here, step by step, on the following pages.

    INTRODUCTION

In one generation we have gone from values to value. We have been influenced and directed by the media - and subsequently TV, newspaper and magazines have catered to the most base of human values.

Look at the flushed faces, the distended bellies, the empty souls. America needs help; our country is crying for direction.  We are faltering like the old Roman Empire. The similarities are striking.  People are begging for temptation to be placed out of reach, for laws to protect the physical body and the emotional peace as well as the national security.

We are sinking into porous ground made of materialistic whim, artery-clogging foods, lack of appreciation for the connection between evolution and exercise, and a dearth of concern for our partnership with nature and each other. This is not the way life is for everyone, or the way it has to be for you. We allow well-meaning others and institutions to influence our thoughts and actions. We slowly, over time, give up our values and dreams due to a lack of internal conviction and external support. We strive after goals that are not our own; goals initiated and endorsed by those who have their own agenda: the mass media.

All we need to do is understand where we really are and be shown the step by step process to regain our physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance - to move down a specific path unaffected by the action or inaction of the majority. There is no thing mystical in this book, only facts presented in their most simplistic form - in a manner that can be adopted forthwith.

    PREFACE

There have been thousands of books written detailing the myriad ways in which others, food, the environment, exercise and meditative practices impact upon our being. Millions of pages of documented studies, test results and testimonials provide us with every piece of knowledge necessary to further our lives and better preserve our world and its resources.  But where do we find the time to ingest, compare, and formulate actions that will maximize our health, peace and productivity?  Even those truly desirous of improving themselves and the planet do not have the wherewithal to sift through a generation's worth of information to extract the essence of The Perfect Day.

This book provides the path to the life you have striven for, a path to your self-proclaimed goals and to fulfilling your hopes and the dreams for your loved ones.

This book is meant for those concerned with more than projection of an image without

    PREFACE (CON’T)

t substance - more than meeting society's standard of health and success - more than success on the superficial level.

For most people, life is analogous to a person sitting on a stool with one leg; we keep being buffeted by the winds of one-dimensional love, materialism, externality, and physical temptations.

QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK YOURSELF

Are you content with your present state of being? Do you wake up with physical energy, a positive attitude, and maintain those throughout the day? You say you are successful. You earn lots of money, have a big home, go to fancy restaurants, and wear expensive clothes. That is society's definition of prosperity. The line between fantasy and reality has been blurred.  Four hours of television a day, a half-dozen movies on the weekends, shopping at illusionary malls, and reinforcement by a mainstream that is inspired and directed by the media and mass-marketers have all turned our attention outward, to the illusiveness of material satisfaction.

Are you stronger, healthier, happier than you were five, ten years ago?  Or do you view such sacrifices as necessary to achieve success?  Do you feel peaceful, or do you assume only gurus and the rich feel peace?  Have you achieved your life's goals or only those goals that television projects upon you?

This book provides, in the course of one day, the required action and the necessary thinking you need to integrate, and make part of your life, in order to fulfill the hopes and dreams you made in your youth.  It is not only possible, it is simple because it is laid out step by step - every action and the reasons behind every action; support for every truth - enough to counter any skeptic or argument you may encounter. You do not have to stop working, or join a spiritual community.  You have only to take control of your actions and environment - rather than be controlled - and to properly use the time that is within your domain.

You are ready for change because life on its present course has only built barriers to your personal ambitions.  Here is a path to a new reality - laid out factually, rationally, and simplistically.  This formula works; there is nothing individualistic about it. No special skills are needed, only acceptance of the fact that the road you have been on has not led to health, fulfillment, and personal satisfaction.

What is required is a proper attitude - an appreciation for the effects, good and bad, that your individual habits and chosen environment have had on your state of being and progress. That equates to accepting responsibility for where you are and what you have attained in comparison to the goals you set entering adulthood.

There was a great line from the movie, Wall Street. Michael Douglas turned to Martin Sheen and said, This is your wake up call, buddy-boy. Consider this your wake up call.

The directions and instructions in this book are given over the course of one Perfect Day - twenty-four hours of optimum focus, action, and growth potential. One of the few assumptions is that work begins at 8:30 A.M. If this is not the case for you, simply adjust the waking time to fit your schedule. Let's begin . . .

    6:30 A.M. - WAKE UP CALL

If you live in a busy area or share a noisy home, have earplugs available and put them in now. Sit in a straight back, firm, but padded, chair. Your seat should look out into nature if possible, or to a peaceful picture scene.  If neither is available, then a blank wall will suffice.  It ought not face a street, TV, or any reminder of business or worldly responsibilities.

Keep your back straight, but not tensed.  Place your hands on your legs with your palms up, elbows touching hips. Close your eyes but keep your gaze slightly upward without tilting your neck. Breathe in through your nose for a count of ten.  Hold your breath for the same count, then exhale through the mouth using the same ten count. Pay attention only to your breath, not the clock, or to your perceived problems.  If your mind wanders bring it back gently to the task at hand, do not reprimand yourself.  Watch your breath - think of it as being a white cloud floating in and out (to give it visible sustenance).  Do this for 10 - 15 minutes.

Facing nature or a peaceful scene gives your mind time to rest. Studies show that stimulation by external sources creates new and stronger neurotransmitters and receptors in the brain. However, too much stimulation actually halts growth and leads to atrophy. The intensity of messages and tensions inherent in the contemporary world create far more stress than the body and brain can handle and therefore have a severely detrimental effect on the nervous system.

Keeping the back correctly supported allows you to breathe deeper. Deep breathing clears out impurities from your lungs far more efficiently than shallow breathing.  Under stress, a person rarely fills the lungs to efficient capacity.  Since the lungs are elastic in nature, they lose their resiliency and ability to function over time unless used maximally. Without proper practice the average person will lose 25-50% of lung capacity by age 50. In fact, shallow breathing is one of the surest sign of tension.

Sitting in a straight chair keeps pressure off the spine and teaches correct posture, which can help avoid disc problems later in life. Under normal circumstances individuals sit slouched, which greatly increases the pressure on the spine.  Back problems account for $48 billion in lost productivity in the U.S. alone. Every one-pound of excess weight lost takes ten pounds of pressure off the back.

Setting the gaze upward focuses attention on light and positive; staring downward places our concerns on material objects and negativity.  Following the breath forces one to take the mind off material, everyday concerns and pay attention to the most vital bodily function. What about the fifteen minutes of sleep you will lose? This form of exercise (rhythmic breathing, TM, etc.) has been proven to lower the pulse rate to a greater degree than any other activity.  It is a medical fact - fifteen minutes of breathing in this manner equals at least as much sleep on a physiological basis. This is why you hear stories of spiritual beings getting by on little or no sleep; there are scientific grounds for such statements.  Further, following your breath is the first step to controlling the breath, and that is the beginning of controlling all thought, feeling, and action.

We are not in control of our minds; if that were so there would be only one clear thought at any one time. This fact is the difference between success and failure.  Every great man, every distinguished accomplishment, had one thing in common: total focus. Until you are able to control your mind and what enters, there can be only limited success.

    6:45 A.M. PROJECTING

Now that you have done your breathing exercise, sit for ten-fifteen minutes right where you are. Bring to mind the tasks and concerns you have for the day. Consider how you will approach and deal with the people and problems at hand. Take each one in order; play out the scenarios in your mind. Review what you will say, how they will respond. Ask the questions you believe may be asked of you. Answer them in the calm you have just created. Do not wait for the heat of battle to rely on heated emotions. Go over it again, changing the questions, responses and circumstances surrounding the situation. See yourself as the director of a movie. Script the dialogue for all participants. Watch their faces, listen to
