If we are what we eat, most of us are processed, fake and unhealthy. Follow Michael Pollan's food journey to discover the real story behind the packaged food on our supermarket shelves.

Food is our most direct connection to the earth, but how much do we really know about what we eat? Most of us don't think too carefully about how our food gets to our table, and if we did know we would probably have a difficult time digesting it. In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan explores the various food chains available to us in the West today, and encourages us to ask more questions about where our food comes from.

You will learn:

· Why the hunter-gatherer lifestyle just isn't a realistic option for most of us

· Why organic produce may not be all it's cracked up to be

· What we can learn from small organic producers.

A Joosr Guide to… The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan - Joosr

    book

    What’s it about?

How do you choose what to eat from the countless options on offer? This is the fundamental question that the author Michael Pollan tries to answer in his book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Human beings are omnivores, which means they can eat a variety of foods, from fruit and vegetables through to fish and meat. But this very ability has created a conundrum about what we should eat.

In The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan embarks on a culinary adventure spanning three types of food chains—the industrial, the organic, and the hunter-gatherer. The food people eat is their most direct connection to the natural world, but Pollan argues that Americans are on the brink of losing this connection because most of them don’t know where their food comes from or where it is processed.

The book begins by looking at processed foods. The author demonstrates how corn and its derivatives have surreptitiously taken over the American diet. Corn is present in nearly every processed food that you will find in a supermarket, and it is even fed to the animals we eat, from cows to farmed salmon. Next, Pollan explores organically grown food, which he divides into two sectors—Big Organic and Small Organic. And, finally, he explores the hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
