    Chapter 1

Sara scratched her calf through her hospital scrub bottoms and removed her tennis shoe, letting it flop to the ground.

For a Monday, the work day had started out slow. But that didn't last long. It never did.

By mid-morning there was Terry. He was one of Dr. Pasqual's new patients and already one of his most high-maintenance. Luckily for the doctor, talking on the phone with Terry and getting him to trust his medications enough to actually take them was something Sara was used to doing.

Even though she was burned out by all the patient calls at the end of the day, she was great at it. She lost herself in listening to everyone's complaints and problems. The fact that Terry and the many other patients who called demanding help always wanted to talk to her made her feel important.

Dr. Pasqual appreciated her keeping them from coming in for extra appointments. Lots of times he couldn't bill insurance for unscheduled visits. He had a business to run after all.

He told her often she was doing a good job. To Sara Britton, that meant everything. Not just because everyone likes to be told that, but because she could tell Dr. Pasqual liked her. Like really liked her. In a way that made her sex tingle and her inner thighs sweat into her cotton panties.

Her feelings about him kept her up nights sometime. Especially the week before when rumors were going around that his wife he brought in from India was divorcing him and going back home. But he wanted to stay in Buffalo.

Of course the doctor wasn't saying, but Sara kept noticing his eyes would meet hers a little longer than normal. Here and there, he'd put his hand on her shoulder when he'd have a question or give an order.

She was the youngest one in the office, and the only one who wasn't married. Plus she knew she was far prettier than the two nurses.

It made sense when she thought it through, that the doctor might have wanted her.

Increasingly that's what she fixated on when she wasn't helping the likes of Terry. It was one person after the other. They might have been manic, or depressed, or anxious, or schizophrenic. It ran the gambit.

Terry happened to be bipolar. He was an older guy who was chronically overweight and had lived with only his animals (birds and cats) for his entire adult life.

Sara thought he was more lonely than anything. He was especially bad on that morning. She had put thirty minutes into the conversation on the phone. She had to. He would have royally messed up the doctor's schedule if he came in.

Terry, you have let these meds take hold. Give it a week, she requested kindly. For me?

She felt like Terry had a crush on her and she always played that card. Like she'd like him more if he just did what he was supposed to with the meds.

Oh ok. For you, he said, before he suddenly hung up the
