This is Part One of the New Adult College Romance Alpha Series.

    One

ZITA GRAHAM STOOD IN the lobby of the office building that seemed to be occupied entirely by Games! Games! And More Games! It was a Wednesday morning and today was – and she had to smile to herself as she thought this – the first day of the rest of her life.

The reason that amused her is that this is what her mother always said when there was any kind of change in the routine. In her mother’s case sometimes a change was nothing more than buying a new fall outfit. When Zita had graduated with her Masters in computer science in the spring, guess what her mother said.

Yes. She said to her only child, Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

In the three months since she graduated Zita had not noticed much difference in her life. She woke up in the same bedroom she had lived in her entire life or at least as long as she could remember. What she didn’t know was whether they had bought it before she was born or shortly after.

She had gone to a local college for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees and she had worked part time in a coffee shop since high school. She still worked in the coffee shop or had until last Saturday. She had been there for eight years and it was just now that she realized that this was more than just a little time off from work at the shop. This was, well, the first day of the rest of her life.

She looked around the lobby and she felt a sense of fear. Her mouth was dry and her heart was pounding. She had friends at work although over the years most of them had come and gone. Her boss, Bessie Grimes, liked her immensely and that was a good thing. What would it be like here?

Over time, Zita had transformed herself from a bland high school junior with mousy brown hair to a Goth girl and Bessie made no comment. During her undergraduate years Zita had toned down the Goth look and avoided too many visible tattoos or body piercings but she had maintained her own unique style of dressing.

Because this was the first day of the rest of her life, Zita had outfitted herself in a new wardrobe. She had new black ankle high boots over
