CHAPTER ONE

Alexa Worthington drew in a deep breath, trying to put the kibosh on her jittery nerves and psych herself up during the team meeting at TLC Advertising.

It wasn’t easy when everyone at work was gossiping behind your back because they think you’ve slept your way to the top—which was categorically not true.

Do you have the report on the Wexford Wireless account ready, Alexa? Jess Tandon, her sexy, enigmatic boss asked her in a smooth, silky voice that sent her pulses racing. That sinking feeling settled in the pit of her stomach. Alexa felt horrible. Jess opened up to her on Tandor Island and she drove a wedge between them out of fear and anxiety. She hadn’t really thought it through.

Um...the report? Alexa fumbled, her mouth felt dry, brittle, cottony. The moisture in her membranes had dried up like the Sahara Desert.

The rest of the team watched eagerly and waited in anticipation for her response as they sat around the shiny, red oak boardroom table, leaning back in the plush leather seats with their MacBooks open in front of them.

Of course, that darn Wexton Wireless report wasn’t ready. Jess knew full well it wouldn’t be ready for at least another week. Alexa was having difficulty reaching the client who was in Europe. So what game was he playing at?

Why was Jess putting her on the spot? Did this have something to do with his sister, Lee, the board member of TLC Advertising who had caught on to their romantic relationship? Or perhaps the fact that while on a work vacation at the Hot Spot Resort on the island of Tandor, Lee confronted them about seeing each other romantically—a clear violation of TLC’s policy regarding Dating in the Workplace. Or maybe it was the fact that she must have inadvertently bruised his delicate male ego by doing what she thought was best—insisting they take a break from seeing each other.

That was it, wasn’t it?

And now he was punishing her. Maybe she shouldn’t have told him they should not see each other. The truth was, Alexa was miserable, her mind was in shambles, her emotions all over the place. She connected with Jess in a special way. He’d made her feel the way no man had ever made her feel. After her late boyfriend Eric had died, she didn’t know if she could ever find the one again. And she did and now she’d gone and screwed it all up. Sort of.

Since Jess and Alexa landed back in Texas, he hadn’t spoken to her about their trip. He hadn’t tried to call her. He must have seen her attempts at calling him on his cell phone screen. It should be common courtesy to return a call, even if the caller didn’t leave a message, if you saw a number calling from someone you knew. Someone you made dizzying, passionate love to during a memorable soul-satisfying night of steamy, unbridled passion should at least receive the courtesy of a return phone call.

Oh, God! Alexa was getting hot inside just thinking about it. A delicious shudder heated her body at the thought of hot, sexy, sweet lips Jess over her body that night. But then that feeling quickly cooled when she was jolted back to reality. In the boardroom.
