CHAPTER 1

Disgrace.

The thought of a workplace sex scandal raced through Jess Tandon’s mind as he sat out on the balcony of his hotel room. He was staying at the Hot Spot Resort located on the island of Tandor. Jess was rushing through some last minute figures for his upcoming meeting. An observer would make the assumption that he was as cool as a slab of ice yet that was not the reality.

Inwardly, Jess was fuming. Something was eating him up inside and that something was a woman.

He held his iPad in his left hand while his index finger on his right hand moved rapidly around the smooth display. In just over an hour the team from TLC Advertising would be meeting to discuss the promotional video shoot for the resort and the substantial costs involved.

Focus, Jess.

There was trouble on the horizon. As clear as an unobstructed view of the island sunrise.

Another allegation had surfaced. Or, the old one had re-surfaced. He’d received a note not long ago requesting an exorbitant sum of six figures. Yeah, Trixie Daniels just didn’t want to let it go, did she? She claimed she had information on Alexa and Jess getting down and dirty in the boardroom during appraisal time—during late hours at the office.

He visualized holding a press conference, hoards of news cameras in his face waiting for him to deny his claim that he had sex at the office against company policy with a newly-promoted employee, a la former U.S. president: "I did not have sex with that woman."

He cringed at the thought and the possible outcome.

What Jess would like to know was—how in hell’s name could Trixie have access to that kind of information? Did she have an insider working for her at the company? She did make a few friends before she got canned. That was possible, wasn’t it? Highly probably actually. Jess stroked his stubble. It seemed as if some trouble just didn’t want to keep away. She was like Velcro attaching herself to his reputation every which way he turned.

Still, nobody was supposed to be in the office at the time when he—made love to Alexa.

I know what you and Alexa did the other week.

In the boardroom.

It’s going to cost you...

Jess felt his core body temperature soar at the thought of reading that crazy message.

Those were the haunting words scribbled on the note. Of course, Trixie wouldn’t want to leave a traceable trail with electronic mail or text messaging knowing full well, even if you deleted emails or texts, they’re still somewhere in cyberspace and could surface any time. As often was the case with high profile political scandals.

Jess sure as hell didn’t want his sister, Lee, to find out about this. God, Lee would ruin Alexa and probably try to push him, her own brother, out of the very company he founded. But he couldn’t care less about Lee’s attempts to keep him under wraps. Lee couldn’t do a darn thing to him and she knew it. Jess was more concerned about Alexa. Alexa’s future. He sure as heck didn’t want people thinking she got ahead not because of what she did, but whom she did.

Trixie, who had filed a phony claim that was tossed out of court, had come forward with this crazy scheme to extort money from Jess. That woman was trying to blackmail him. Big mistake. Jess didn’t do too well with people trying to pull a fast one on him.

Jess got rid of her within a week after finding out she’d been pilfering funds from client accounts and drafting fake receipts to claim expenses that didn’t even exist. Shoot, why didn’t Trixie run for politics instead of joining his firm in the first place? She was always scheming.

When he’d caught on to what she was doing, Trixie filed a claim that she’d been let go because she’d refused his advances. What advances? The only advance she’d gotten from him was two-weeks pay with notice. And she was damn lucky she got that!

How much could a guy take?

Risks.

Jess always took ‘em. He lived for the thrill of life. He often lived dangerously—but not stupidly. He didn’t take risks with his health or his heart. Losing his livelihood and all he’d worked for would be bad as sin for his health. That’s why he made it a point to stay the hell away from female employees. TLC even took measures by formulating a dating-in-the-workplace policy. Well, his sister was more adamant in regards to it.

No dating in the workplace! Especially involving supervisors and subordinates.

But this was different. Period.

Alexa Worthington was different. This would all shoot down to hell if they found out he’d made love to her after her evaluation and prior to her official promotion.

What was he thinking?

Man, this did not look good. This wreaked major destruction for everything he’d ever worked for.

But still, he couldn’t just drop Alexa like a hot iron. Not now.

First off, he wasn’t the type of hit ‘n' run lover. He never believed in loving and leaving women. He was always up front about wanting a no-emotional-strings-attached type of affair. But Alexa had been celibate for more than two years. She wasn’t a one-night stand type of girl. She wanted...needed someone who could be there for her emotionally and everything else. Could he truly give her that now, under the circumstances?
