    Anna

You know that feeling you get when you’ve dreamt of something for a long time (two years!) and then some other woman is asked to marry him, and then you pretend you’re fine with it, but really, you’re not? No? Well, I do.

Two years ago, I started work as a personal assistant for Dean Romance, owner of Romance Diaries Boutiques. It was destiny; you know? There he was, tall, blonde, blue-eyed, barely looking up, shuffling papers, signing documents asking: Do you want the job or not?

There I was, broke, working through the night as a waitress and sleeping on a stinky couch in a club my friend managed. I sucked at being a waitress because I’m bossy. At least that is what Adan told me. Of course, I said yes to Mr. Romance, what idiot wouldn’t? Actually, I shouted it at him, in pain.

From that first day, when he finally looked up and those blue eyes dragged over me with a genuinely offended look, I fell. Hard. No really. My knees wobbled, I felt nauseous and dizzy, I just about passed out; hit my head on his desk all while shouting, Yes!.

I admit, he had second thoughts. I saw it on his face, but I sure as hell didn’t.

After that, he never so much as looked at me in that way, and I never so much as breathed a word to him.

Since then, I’ve been the best damn executive P. A in the world. You can believe it. I attended every ball with him, every launch, every ‘after party’ for his A-list friends. I’ve taken every drunk-dialed phone call, spend hours with his pedantic mother who insists on feeding me whenever she gets the chance. I’ve helped him pick ties, birthday gifts, and lied for him to get out of dinner engagements on the nights he was just too tired to be the family guy. I’ve driven him to, and from, the airport more times than I can count and have taken 3 am calls when he forgets the time-zone changes and just needed to hear ‘An intelligent voice of reason’.

Yeah, and how does he reward me? He runs off to Paris for a month, comes back and announces his engagement! I didn’t even know he was dating. Mrs. Romance-to-be will be here, from Paris, in three weeks, and he wants to marry her then. Three weeks. And you know how the infomercials say, ‘But wait, there’s more,’? Yeah, there’s more. A minute ago—in fact just now when I started this rant to you, my invisible mind-buddy–he had the audacity, the bloody gall, to ask me if I’d help him arrange a surprise wedding for her.

I panicked. Right after I pretended to be happy for him, I panicked and said Of course! I’m all over that!

No, I’m not. I’ve been all over you, Mr. Romance, in oh! so! many places and I am sure if you were dating at that time, I cheated on your future wife. With you. In my sleep, and sometimes, while I was awake too.

Thank you, Anna! You really are such a lifesaver!

No, Dean Romance, I’m not. Nor are you, you’ve just killed my dreams but you wouldn’t know that. Ever.

It’s open! I yell at the knock on the door. It is Friday, and that means Adan and Lisa stop in for a chat, a bottle of wine and takeout. I’m not in the mood for anything, to be sure, but this has been our thing since just after high school.

Hey, oh gods sssssss! Adan hisses at the albums strewn all over. I look past him with a frown.

    Where’s Lisa?

Eh, she has a thing at work. I had to choose between being bored or being drunk and bored. You won. Adan and I grew up together. We made each other promise that if one gets adopted, the other would fuss until we’re together again. We shared the foster parents and that, as far as we’re concerned, makes us brother and sister. Our foster family is nice people. We struggled with them, celebrated with
