Chapter 1
Annette no longer had any doubts that the book was real. Her legs ached and still swelled. Heat radiated off of them, but the blisters had gone down considerably. She could not deny that it was real. It hurt too much for it to be anything but real. Still she did not want to admit that she was scared. What on earth had she gotten herself into? Why had she been so quick to move halfway across the country? This must have been why everything seemed too good to be true. There was a catch. A painful, confusing catch that she could not begin to understand, one that she certainly did not want.
What can I do?
Lorelei rushed over to her, stopping short of reaching out and touching Annette’s legs. Oh Annie, does it hurt very badly?
It’s starting to go away, but yeah, it’s painful,
Annette said as she tried to hide the fear and pain from her friend. She was not used to hiding anything from Lorelei, but she had to hide how bad this was, how she knew more now, what she knew now.
I’ll go get some cool cloths for you, which should help with the stinging right?
Lorelei asked frantic with concern.
That would be good, thanks,
Annette replied, though as she said it, she could feel the pain dissipating and the swelling going down. She had the strong feeling that by the time Lorelei got back to her room, there would be little to worry about in the form of injury to her legs.
Okay, you just sit tight, I’ll be right back,
Lorelei said as she rushed out of the room in search of clean towels.
Where would I go?
Annette mumbled to herself as she reached a tentative hand out to feel the heat that was still radiating from her legs. Holding out her hand just inches above her skin, she thought peaceful thoughts. As foolish as she felt, it seemed to be working, the sting had faded to a low ache and the swelling was down to a light pink tint on her skin. She was not sure how long she sat there like that, thinking about being calm and peaceful, or why it had even occurred to her to do so. However long it was, it worked. By the time Lorelei made it back to her bedroom, Annette’s legs were back to normal again.
Here I brought you a towel and some ice, I didn’t know what else to get,
Lorelei said as
