About this ebook

All their lives Eric and Tristan thought they were just as normal as every other kid out there...until they moved to Sereneville where they discovered not only the town's dark secrets but those of their own heritage.
Of all the places Raven and her parents had moved to, she thought Sereneville was perhaps the worst. Little did she know how right she was.
Jade had lived in Sereneville all her life and hated it. There was never anything to do in town nor did anything even remotely exciting occur. If only she'd known how what changes were about to take place.

Author

Zach Robertson, Jr

First timer in writing, or publishing, for that matter. I've always been sort of a "dreamer" when it came to writing books. I've started many a book only to get stuck in the middle or lose interest or hope of making it worthwhile. I realise now that the only person who can make it worthwhile is myself. I'm now trying to turn my "dream" into reality. It hasn't been easy but they say no pain no gain. I just hope my readers see something in my books and hopefully get a good read out of them......and for those who might wonder, Zach Robertson is just a pen name.

    Prologue

    Eric & Tristan Xavier, 1994

Angeline, are you crazy! Athena chided her little sister. I can’t believe you would be so stupid. He is a vampire, someone forbidden to even come in contact with. Don’t mean to sound so cliché but you’ve been sleeping with the enemy!

I know, Angeline said, hardly able to keep the tears from falling down her face. But you don’t know him like I do Athena, she pleaded. He’s such a romantic, really learned and not even close to what the council always portrays them to be. He is gentle and kind and……loving. Her eyes took on a dreamy state as she thought about the day she’d just spent with Julian.

At the look on her sister’s face, Athena snorted. Get your head out of the clouds Angeline, your love is not possible and never will be. The council would never allow it, not to mention two people called Mum and Dad. I can’t believe I went through with this ridiculous idea in the first place.

What do you mean? Angeline said, a frown crossing her face. You’re not thinking about telling this to anyone are you?

Athena let out an exasperated breath. No I’m not, she said begrudgingly, but you must promise me that this is the last I’ll hear of it. No buts Angie, she cut her sister’s protests short, this is a really dangerous situation. It could bring about serious repercussions for the entire family. You know Frederik does not tolerate disobedience.

Fine, Angeline said. She went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator, taking out a carton of milk. So what are you doing tonight? she called while gulping down the milk straight from the carton. I thought perhaps a run in the woods would be nice. It’s been ages since we did that.

Oh I’m sorry Angie, Athena said, but I kind of already made plans with Nate; dinner and a movie.

Angeline’s ears perked up at this new information. Really, she said slyly. Is that all you two love birds will be doing tonight? she asked a wicked gleam in her eye.

Don’t be crude, her sister wrinkled her nose at her. Nate is a gentleman and besides, he said he wants to talk to Dad first before things go any further.

Of course he does, Angeline replied, sarcasm oozing from her voice. Well I guess it will just be me and the moon tonight, she said, stretching and yawning at the same time.

Her sister took in the nonchalant movements. Athena, she warned, I meant what I said about staying away from Julian, vampires and werewolves were never meant to be together. This would only end up in disaster.

Arrgh, you worry too much Athena, you might end up getting pimples on that lovely face of yours. Besides, I’m just going out for a run, and after that I’m coming right back home. I’m not gonna see Julian or any other vampire tonight, so you just go out and have fun alright. She kissed her sister on the cheek and quickly walked out the door, leaving Athena looking worriedly at her departing back.

A few weeks passed and the vampire issue was not mentioned again. Athena thought perhaps Angeline had a brain after all and had decided to take her advice but soon, she noticed her sister was acting strange. Always tired, never being able to keep down food for long and always rushing off to the bathroom at inopportune times. One day she caught Angeline with her head in the toilet, trying from the way it seemed, to wretch her insides out.

Angie, she said softly, are you alright? She knelt down beside her sister, combing her hair back as she rubbed her shoulder soothingly. A sob escaped Angeline and Athena stared into her sister’s tear drenched face. What’s wrong Angie, why are you crying?

Angeline looked up somberly, almost choking on the words she spilt out. I’m pregnant Athena, I’m pregnant. She broke down again and let the tears run freely now.

Athena surprised herself with her calmness as she asked the question even when knowing its answer. Is Julian the father? Angeline only nodded as her speech skills were highly limited to low but frequent sobs now. Athena longed to be angry with her but only pity and sadness filled her heart. She knew what true love felt like and how hard it was to resist such a love, vampire or no vampire. But this matter did not just involve them now. It involved the entire tribe, their entire family. How would their parents react to this, how would the council react to this? We have to tell Mum and Dad, she said finally. They’ll know what to do.

This decision seemed to galvanize Angeline back to land of the talking. No, she said, shaking her head. We can’t tell Athena; you know they would just take this straight to the council.

No they wouldn’t, Athena said, acknowledging the lie as soon as the words left her mouth. That would only spell trouble for you and they wouldn’t jeopardize their own daughter’s safety.

And if their daughter brought shame to their family and put the whole tribe at risk? Would they still love and support her? She was back to her emotional mess, a fresh batch of tears finding their way down her face.

Athena decided to sidestep the question. She breathed deeply. Look, maybe they don’t have to know. You’re only a couple of weeks in right? So there’s still time to……

Angeline’s eyes bulged at what her sister was suggesting. You want me to abort? she asked horrified.

Athena matched her stare. Don’t act so surprised. Obviously you didn’t think of keeping it did you?

I can’t believe I’m hearing this from my own sister! Angeline got up from the floor having finished her bout of morning sickness for the day. You want me to kill a living human being?

It’s not living Angie, it hasn’t even formed yet. She followed her sister into the bedroom. And what do you expect me to say? What do you expect anybody will say?

We are of the Children of Gaea Athena; we do not kill innocent human lives.

"Angie, you’re carrying the child of a vampire and you are a werewolf. She looked at her sister solemnly. You’re carrying a hybrid and we both know not even the life loving Children of Gaea will be able to forgive such an indiscretion and allow your abomination into this world. She sat down resignedly on the bed. Have you even talked to Julian yet?"

I saw him last night, Angeline answered. He feels the same way I do. He wants to keep the baby.

Athena could not keep her anger at bay anymore and rounded on her sister. Have you two even thought about the consequences of your actions? Relations between vampires and werewolves are at their highest low and now you two decide to cuddle up and make them even lower! She got up and started pacing the room, running her hands through her thick crop of dark auburn hair. There’s a reason why mating between our species is unthinkable Angie, a hybrid would have the strengths of both species and would be more powerful than anything you can imagine. Such power can be devastating in the wrong hands. That’s why there are very few hybrids in history and they were all killed before their inner hybrid could be unleashed.

I know our history Athena, Angeline said taking out a duffel bag from underneath her bed.

So why did you do this? Athena pleaded with her eyes, trying to understand. Why jeopardize everything for the sake of a vampire?

Angeline stopped in her tracks for a moment and looked hard and long at her older sister. Athena had always been the sensible one even when they were growing up. She would scold her sister whenever Angeline got into trouble and claim it was all her fault so that Angeline would be spared a severe reprimand from their father. Would she do the same now, or did she just not understand? Because I love him Athena, she finally answered. And he loves me. I guess it’s difficult to understand being in love with a vampire but that’s just the way it is. She started throwing clothes into the duffel bag.

What are you doing? Athena asked.

Making the most difficult decision I will ever make in my life.

This is insane Angeline, Athena said, using her full name to better emphasize just what she thought of the ludicrous idea her sister had cooked up. You can’t just run off with Julian and expect everyone to sit back and let you go. The council will never allow it, I doubt the vampires will allow one of their own to go fleeting off with their sworn enemy and you both would be hunted down until they found you. She caught her sister’s arm as she walked towards the door, duffel bag on her shoulder. Please think about this Angie, she pleaded. I don’t want to lose you.

Angeline looked at her, her eyes already moist from the tears threatening to run down her face. I have to Athena, she said. We both know Mum and Dad are very loyal to the tribe and you have to be too. Athena shook her head. Yes you do, Angeline said, taking her hands in hers. You will be punished too if they discover you left me to leave knowing what you do. But I just want to ask for a day sis, just twenty four hours before you tell anybody what’s going on. I promise Julian and I will be far away by then. The roles reversed, she now clutched a sobbing Athena in her arms. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. She drew back and wiped the tears from her sister’s face. I’ll call you as soon as we reach someplace safe.

And with that, she strode off down the street, Athena’s sad puffy eyes following her until she turned a corner and made for the dark woods that surrounded part of the little town. Good bye, Athena whispered into the wind.

Angeline reached a clearing in the woods where she and Julian used to meet, panting as she came to a stop. Coming here would have been a lot easier and faster if she had been able to shift but of course she couldn’t carry the duffel bag in her werewolf form. She started as she heard a twig snap, her keen ears perking at the sound as her eyes glowed a light yellow. Her nose picked up his vampire scent even as he appeared silently into her line of view.

Her heart warmed at the sight of her beloved again. Broad shouldered and tall Julian had a striking beautiful face, with thick blond almost golden hair flowing down to his shoulders. Angeline had always been told of vampires and their powers of seduction and now, standing in front of this vampire, she knew that was true.

Julian looked at the woman before him. Was there ever a more beautiful sight? He thought about what he was giving up for her, his home his family, his clan. Coming up to clutch her small face in her hand, he knew she was worth all that and more. They embraced, breathing
