Zach Robertson, Jr

First timer in writing, or publishing, for that matter. I've always been sort of a "dreamer" when it came to writing books. I've started many a book only to get stuck in the middle or lose interest or hope of making it worthwhile. I realise now that the only person who can make it worthwhile is myself. I'm now trying to turn my "dream" into reality. It hasn't been easy but they say no pain no gain. I just hope my readers see something in my books and hopefully get a good read out of them......and for those who might wonder, Zach Robertson is just a pen name.

    Prologue

    1994

Athena Xavier stepped off the bus into the warm heat of Miami. She was tired and she regretted her decision of not taking a plane instead. The little cute monsters on the other hand looked well rested and impatient for her to get a move on. It was strange—they seemed to have grown already during this past week. Their eyes were open, and they were already making gurgling sounds. Damn rascals.

As she hailed a cab, Athena hoped she’d been able to get away from danger unnoticed. She was skeptical that her parents and the vampires had been convinced that Julian and Angeline had died with their children that night. Of the two, she was more afraid of the vampires. Her family and the rest of the pack would certainly mourn the loss of one of their own and in time would come to accept what Athena did. However, the vampires would be less forgiving and much more relentless in their pursuit of her. A hybrid was a vampire’s worst terror and they wouldn’t risk such a powerful supernatural entity to breed more of its own and possibly wage war against them.

Athena got into a cab and asked to be taken to the nearest hotel. All the way there, she contemplated what she would do. Here she was, just a shade over nineteen (her birthday had been on that dreadful night matter of fact) and with two babies in tow. Fortunately, Julian and Angeline had left quite a tidy sum in their account and it would sure tide them over before she even started thinking about getting a job—which in itself was no easy matter because she had just finished school and had been in the process of applying to a college when all hell broke loose. Never mind, this would give her a chance to try something new. She’d always enjoyed working with computers and was pretty good when it came to graphic and web designing.

They arrived at the hotel and Athena quickly paid the fare and with her twin package, marched into the hotel. When she finally arrived at the room she’d paid for, Athena was glad to see the double bed that was awaiting her limp tired body. But before she could take a much needed shower and close her eyes, she had some baby feeding to do. She was suddenly grateful for all those times she’d babysat for the neighbors to earn some extra money while still at school. That knowledge would prove invaluable now.

She set the babies on the bed and set about changing diapers, all the while carrying on a conversation with them as if they could perfectly hear what she was saying and she would even pause once in a while so they could weigh in with their gugus and gagas, taking their comments quite seriously indeed.

Thirty minutes later, bathed, changed and fed, the babies were playing on the floor, amazingly already able to sit up. Athena was shocked. This definitely had to be the hybrid genes in them. At this rate, they’d reach puberty before they even knew what a girl was.

Making sure they were safe, Athena went and took her own cleansing shower and coming back, found the babies fast asleep. Perfect. She tucked them in with her in the huge bed and yawning, closed the curtains and drifted off to sleep.

One week later, having found a nice apartment in which to live in for the moment as she went about putting their lives in order, Athena was walking down the street to a grocery store when she suddenly felt a shiver run through her. She quickly took a look around and saw nobody out of the ordinary. She shrugged and walked on.

Two steps forward and there was the shiver again. This time, she pretended to check herself in a shop window and noticed someone looking at her from across the road. She immediately sensed the vampire and almost panicked. She was very glad that she’d chosen that day to leave the twins with her neighbor across the hall. Pretending not to have noticed anything, she continued towards the grocery store, her mind working overtime as to her escape.

She entered the grocery store and went straight to whom she assumed was the owner.

Excuse me Sir but I need to use your back exit. I’m trying to get away from my husband and he keeps following me, she lied, adding a strain to her voice for good measure.

The store manager looked at her, bemused and not really convinced. Your husband is following you?

Yes, Athena replied looking over her shoulder. I’ve filed for divorce but he won’t sign the papers and just last week he ambushed me at my apartment. Athena was getting agitated now. Please I just need to go out your back exit. I don’t want to cause any trouble for you.

The store manager looked out the window at the man walking with purpose towards his store, a dark look on his face. He finally relented. Alright honey, go on and get outta here. And I gotta say that man is a damn fool for ever letting you go. He winked at her and Athena thanked him profusely and quickly ran out the back exit, disappearing just as the door to the store was opened.

Having narrowly escaped, Athena got in a cab and went straight back to her apartment where she found the twins safe and (not surprising) sleeping peacefully. She thanked her neighbor for watching them and went into her apartment. She started packing, taking only the essentials—mostly baby clothes and accessories as she figured she could always buy her clothes later—as she knew she did not have much time. The vampire would have known by now that she’d escaped but would not stop searching as he knew she was in Miami and sooner or later would find her. It was time to move on again but where could she move where they wouldn’t be able to find her?

Having finished packing, she put the twins in their double push pram and carrying a duffel bag on her shoulder, stepped out onto Miami’s streets. Her short spiky brown hair had been tucked in a blonde wig and she had applied quite some heavy make up to her face. She’d changed her clothes and was wearing dark heavy sunglasses. Despite all that, she still felt naked when she crossed the street and hailed a cab, her werewolf senses in sixes and sevens every time someone walked by. Still without a genuine destination in her head, Athena opted for a plane as her means of escape this time round and asked to be taken to the airport.

She arrived at the airport still indecisive and walked into the building slowly, looking up at the destination boards of the numerous planes going out as she sat next to a ginger haired woman in her mid-thirties with a perky little face and warm smile. Her neighbor almost squealed when she saw the twins all curled up (okay it was becoming worrisome, these babies were like only awake for thirty minutes each day) and fast asleep.

Her name was Alison Brady and to say she was very fond of kids was an understatement. She actually had three of her own—two boys and a girl. She had a photo of them in her purse and she showed it to Athena.

Oh they’re so cute, Athena said. The photo showed two ruddy boys holding up a fish on a hook while a little girl stood pointing at them with a big smile on her face. How old are they?

Alison Brady beamed with pride as she answered, John is eleven, Peter is eight and Alison is six.

I see why she carries your name, she looks just like you. Athena looked at the photo a little longer. Where was this taken, they all look so happy.

Yes they do don’t they? She tucked the photo back in her purse. We took the photo last year when we were visiting my parents in California. They live in a nice little hideaway town, the most peaceful I’ve ever seen. Oh but you would love it there! It’s especially a good place to raise kids. They have a wonderful school, great community…… She stopped in mid-sentence and chuckled awkwardly. I’m sorry. I tend to talk too much at times.

Not at all, Athena said suddenly very interested in what the woman had to say. Tell me more about this town. You said it was hidden?

She nodded. You can almost miss the turnoff if you’re not looking for it. It’s a small town really, only has about just three hundred residents.

Interesting, Athena commented then as an afterthought added, What’s the name of the town?

    It’s called Sereneville.

    Chapter One

    Present Day

The past twenty four hours had revealed an entire lifetime’s worth of secrets for Eric and Tristan Xavier. They were living in a town filled with vampires and werewolves and had just been told that even they were products of the same supernatural species but were even more ‘special’ because they were hybrids—a cross between a vampire and werewolf.

They had been told they were the first of their kind in more than five hundred years and had even been lucky to be born. Of course, the boys were perplexed. They’d never felt any unusual power or anything out of the ordinary to suggest they might not be like normal people but their mother had said that was because their hybrid gene was suppressed and not functional. A bite from either species however would trigger the gene. After the initial shock, they’d become interested and had asked about their abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Athena had been more than happy to oblige their quick fire questions. She laughed at some of the questions as she could see they were purely based on mythical information from the internet.

I don’t get it, Tristan was saying. If vampires and werewolves hate each other so much, how’s it even impossible to have hybrids like us?

It sounds weird right? But it is possible when you share a love like your mother shared for your father. She didn’t see him as a vampire but rather as a man she inexplicably fell in love with.

Kinda like you and Jade, Eric commented, chuckling at the frown his brother gave him.

Speaking of vampires why did Raven attack Eric? Tristan asked, remembering the chaos that had taken place not long ago. "I thought you said werewolf blood is poisonous to vampires and we do have it in our system don’t we?"

Athena looked at Eric as she answered, Raven is uh—sick. She’s not really herself.

How is that possible? Eric asked. Vampires can’t get sick.

They can if they’re bitten by a werewolf. We have a poisonous bite to them and the bite drives them delirious before it eventually kills them.

There was silence at the table for a minute.

You mean Raven’s going to die? Eric broke the silence.

    Unfortunately, yes, Athena answered. Unless….

    Unless what?

Athena hesitated. On one hand, she did not really care if Raven died or not. To be honest, she rather preferred it. That would mean one less vampire to worry about. On the other hand, Eric seemed to care about Raven and even looking at him now, she could see the sadness in his face. Unless you give her your blood.

Eric blinked. What do you mean?

"I mean the only cure for a werewolf bite is hybrid blood. Raven needs to drink your blood in order to survive or she will die."

Eric toyed with his coffee mug before making a decision. I’m going over there.

Athena did not bother trying to stop him. She knew it would be a fruitless cause. Instead, she said, I’m coming with you.

Tristan stood up. Hell if everyone’s going then I guess I’m going too.

The last people Alistair Savage would have expected on his doorstep was the trio he opened the door to that morning—especially after what had just happened less than an hour ago.

What the hell are you doing here? He whispered urgently, closing the door behind him and keeping them outside. A strange reception for people who had come to save your daughter if ever there was one.

It’s not what you think, Athena said. We’re only here to help your daughter.

And exactly how do you figure that? Do you have some magic potion or something?

No, Eric answered. This was the first time he was meeting Raven’s father and the man certainly gave a bad first impression. But we do have hybrid blood so if you still care for your daughter, you’ll let us in.

Alistair chuckled, sure he hadn’t heard right. "You have hybrid blood? Where would you even get such a thing?"

Athena had already considered the repercussions of her answer. You’re looking at the source.

    Alistair
