About this ebook

Months after the events of Black Heart, Nasira is off to attend the vampire Senate in Tokyo, leaving Annie alone with three rules: stay behind, don't have guests, and be good. Annie violates this immediately by inviting over her brother, Asher, and traveling to Tokyo to surprise Nasira. But, it's Annie who's surprised: she arrives in time to witness a failed assassination attempt on her lover! With Nasira in a coma, Annie must enter the world of vampire intrigue and Japanese mythology, aided by her brother (not so much) and a timid doujinshi author (more than you'd think), and figure out who tried to kill Nasira before they come back to finish the job!

    Chapter One

Watching someone pack was easily the most boring shit in the world, in Annie’s opinion. And watching Nasira pack was no different-- even though she got a really great view of her ass every time she bent down to take something out of a drawer.

Packing had bad associations for Annie. When someone is packing a bag, it means they’re leaving. And it didn’t matter if they were leaving the ancestral Goldstein lands forever, like her older brothers, or leaving for an extended business trip in Japan, like Nasira was; in the end, it was somebody leaving her. And Annie did not like to be left behind.

She was sitting cross-legged on their bed, watching clothes disappear into Nasira’s neat little suitcase-- which, she thought, was holding way more than a bag that size should. She wrote it off as some kind of bullshit magic. Do you really need that many cocktail dresses? she said, giving the latest midnight blue number a skeptical look.

Nasira sighed, her tone one of someone who had explained this many times before in the past half hour. Yes, love, I do. This is my first Summit and I’ve no idea what to expect. My predecessor hadn’t exactly imparted much in the way of guidance.

A year or two ago, in the year that Annie referred to as Legit the Worst Year Ever in the History of Years, Nasira had been elected to the Senate-- basically the One World Government for vampires-- completely against her will, because of the conniving of a little jerk named Colin. Nasira didn’t like it, so Annie didn’t either, even though she really didn’t understand the whole thing. But, then again, Annie hated a lot of things she didn’t understand. Like long division. Or secret menus at fast food places.

Annie rolled onto her back and looked up at Nasira through a thick fringe of fuzzy auburn hair. You don’t have to go, you know, she said. You could just, like, tell them to suck it and just never show up. What’s the worst they could do?

Oh, have me killed, if the rumors are true. She smiled at Annie’s expression of horror. Relax, love, I’m joking.

"I can never tell when you’re joking! You know that!"

    I do.

You have to, like, preface it with something, I dunno! Just say, ‘Hey, I’m joking,’ so I don’t freak out over stuff that isn’t true!

After snapping her suitcase shut, Nasira sat down on the bed and started to pet Annie’s hair. I have a sense of responsibility for this whole mess, Annabelle, she said with a sigh. I’m the one who let Colin’s constant annoyances get to me; I’m the one who gave in. She smiled. Besides, I haven’t been to Japan in quite a few years. I assume it’s changed quite a bit since the Meiji Restoration.

... Yeah, sure, whatever old person thing you’re referring to there. She sat up and looked down at Nasira’s face. She was concerned. Are you sure about this, babe? I mean, going by yourself...

Love, I can’t fathom the amount of trouble you’d cause over there. I want to make something of a good impression on all those stuffy old diplomats. She cupped her face and kissed her. Promise me you’ll stay behind and be a good little girl, won’t you? she said against her lips.

Annie sighed dramatically. Yeah, sure, I guess.

    And no guests.

    Got it.

    "I’m quite serious about
