Epilogue
Prologue
On January, 21, 1989 Dr Manoj Malhotra and Purti Malhotra gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Kasak. Kasak was not an ordinary girl, she was different. She was blessed with divine powers. The unavoidable fate of Kasak was revealed by the little girl’s paternal uncle Sunil, who was an astrologist. Sunil predicted that Kasak would grow into a graceful woman who would crack crime cases that hadn’t been solved by anyone.
The prediction scared the Malhotras and they decided to keep their dear daughter away from crime and criminals.
Kasak’s parents did not have their own house in the city of Mumbai. They lived in Kasak’s uncle Sunil’s place for a year. The Malhotras celebrated Kasak’s first birthday at Sunil’s place. Dr Manoj Malhotra was a cardiologist and his wife Purti was a homemaker. Manoj worked day and night to earn money to buy a house. Kasak was growing up fast and they needed their own place. Sunil’s house was too small to accommodate Sunil, his family, and the Malhotras.
It was during the monsoon season that Manoj and Purti came to know that there was a flat available in town at a cheap price. So, they decided to look at the flat before making a decision. They left Kasak with Nazuk aunty. Nazuk was Sunil’s wife. The Malhotras took a cab to the prospective house.
It was raining heavily. The road was foggy. The driver of the cab could not see anything clearly. So, he drove slowly. Unfortunately, the cab was hit by a fast-moving vehicle from behind. The cab turned over. The driver and Manoj died on the spot. Luckily, Purti was alive but unconscious. She was admitted to a nearly hospital, where she went into a coma.
Kasak had to live with uncle Sunil and aunty Nazuk. They were decent, gentle and nice people. They had a son Ravi, who was three years younger than Kasak. Ravi and Kasak grew up together much like a brother and sister. They were very close to each other. Kasak always considered Ravi her real brother even though he was only her cousin.
Ravi wasn’t a smart boy. His intelligence was below average. Kasak, on the other hand, was very sharp and could grasp things faster than children of her age. Maybe because she was blessed with a divine power, which would be disclosed later in her life.
The First Premonition
The year was 1994. It was morning on New Year’s Day. There were just 20 days to go for Kasak’s fifth birthday. Sunil and Nazuk had gone out of town for a few days to celebrate the New Year, leaving Kasak and two-year-old Ravi in the hands of their babysitter Shreya. Shreya was a really good sitter. She had a bachelor’s degree in teaching pre-primary children in the age group of 2-5 years. So, Sunil and Nazuk did not mind leaving the two kids under Shreya’s supervision for a few days.
By now, Kasak could recognise all the alphabet and converse well. Shreya had also taught Kasak simple mathematics: addition and subtraction with small numbers. Kasak was a fast learner, unlike Ravi, who didn’t do anything buy cry the whole day. She loved to play games such as hide-and-seek with Shreya. She was very active and super smart, despite her tender age.
Shreya was an intelligent college-going girl. She was doing a bachelor’s degree in business administration from a reputed management college in Mumbai. She was able to bag a place in the college thanks to her bachelor’s degree in teaching. She had also done well in the personal interview, group discussion, and written test.
Shreya knew how to handle kids. She understood children and what they wanted very well. Kasak was very fond of Shreya because Shreya knew exactly what she needed and when.
For three days, Kasak and Shreya had a great time together. But on the fourth day, Kasak was unwell. She felt dizzy and fainted. Shreya tried hard to wake up Kasak but her repeated attempts did not yield anything. So, Shreya took Kasak to the nearby hospital. The doctors took the little girl into the examination room.
After an hour, the doctors came out and told Shreya that Kasak’s blood pressure had dropped as the nutrition content in her body had not been enough. The doctors then asked Shreya whether Kasak had been eating properly. Shreya, who was holding Ravi, nearly dropped him when she realised that she had not seen Kasak eat anything in the past 2-3 days. Shreya had been negligent. She had given Kasak food but she had not monitored her eating. She had been focussing on little Ravi all the time, as he was still a toddler. He was a fussy eater and took a lot of time to gulp his food.
Shreya cursed herself for being careless but that couldn’t change Kasak’s condition. When Shreya asked the doctors about Kasak’s recovery, they told her that she would be unconscious for a couple of hours. After she woke up, the doctors would examine her, and if everything was fine, she could be taken home
