Chapter 1
I’m cold. This is not my bed. I feel it even before my eyelids are open. Blinding light gives my eyes a sharp but slowly fading pain, as well as constricted pupils. My eyes squint on reflex, and I try to shield the light with my hands… but my hands don’t obey me. I try to move them, but they are tightly secured by metal shackles. There are restraints on my ankles as well. I thrash against the chains in efforts to escape but they do not budge. I’m naked except for a thin white sheet spread from my shoulders to my ankles. The restraints are connected to a metal table with wheels. It moves slightly as I writhe under the sheet, trying to think of another way to be free.
I look around. There are cabinets containing bottles of liquid in varied colors and syringes with needles of all sizes. Massive computer equipment is situated next to telescopes and other apparatus. The entire room is white and has the feel of a lab. I hear nothing but the hum of a chiller holding neatly stacked transparent bottles of liquid. There is a table next to me with carefully laid out operating instruments and there’s also another silver table. It’s just like mine.
This one holds a thin white sheet covering my mother. She is unconscious. I thrash myself around some more. This time with the intention of moving the wheels of the table that imprisons me.
If I could just get to that table, maybe I could squeeze my hands close enough to get an instrument to free me from my shackles.
I hear footsteps. In my mind, I debate whether I should call for help or pretend to be asleep. I decide on the latter.
I know you’re awake my little monkey
a voice drawls.
I could recognize that voice anywhere. I open my eyes to confirm my suspicions.
Rafferty smiles.
I wake up screaming and feeling around frantically. I feel the softness and comfort of my bed and my hands are not shackled. I’m disoriented but I recognize my bedroom and I notice that Nanny stands at my door. She walks into my room with a cup of tea and places it on my bedside table.
"Drink." It’s a command.
I’m not in the mood for tea but I know better than to argue with Nanny. I sit up and place the steaming herb-brew to my lips. It smells delicious but no herb I’m familiar with. I take a sip. It’s actually quite nice.
Nanny is peeping through my drapes warily. As if someone is right outside and about to come in and harm us. "What’s wrong Nanny?"
"Just drink the tea and be quiet." she mutters before exiting my room.
Nanny has been like this since
