Preface
Like most kids growing up on the mountain prior to the 1990s, I received my first set of skis shortly after I learned to walk. Skiing was the dominant culture back then and everyone I knew did it. For us, racing down the slopes and mastering jumps on a set of skis was as cool as it got. By the time I got to middle school, though, times were about to change. My friends and I started hearing mumblings of a new group of rebels and troublemakers who wanted to take over our mountain. They rode a single ski, called a snowboard
, and their feet were perpendicular to its nose, instead of facing forward. Our parents were livid. These hooligans would be a danger to all of us on the mountain, they insisted. I have to admit that at first, I shared the adults’ concerns. Who did these guys think they were?! This was our mountain!
My feelings were soon about to change. My family and I attended a local ski competition. As part of the entertainment, a group of snowboarders put on an expedition, showing off some pretty killer skills and maneuvers. They did things on their boards we could never have attempted on skis, and their style was unlike any I had seen before. I HAD to try it! Snowboarders weren’t allowed on my local mountain at the time, so my parents reluctantly took a few friends and me to a nearby ski resort that had just introduced a few runs for boarders. We rented some gear and awkwardly made our way to the lift. The first few runs were brutal, but my frustration soon turned to triumph when I mastered a few basic skills and turns. By the end of that first day, I was hooked. I pleaded with my parents to take me a few more times that season, and my skill set increased tremendously. I became immersed in the snowboarding culture, and I realized that the boarders I hung out with on the slopes weren’t troublemakers at all, but were just a group
