SOUTH AFRICANS get few chances to try downhill snow skiing. Maybe you’ll have a trip to the Alps or the United States once or twice in your lifetime, or even to Lesotho when conditions are favourable, but it’s uncommon at best.

If you get the chance to go skiing, you should grab it, but there are definitely a few things to know before you go. I found these out through first-hand experience on a skiing trip to a resort called Sunday River in Maine in the north-east of the US, during my recent end-of-year holiday.
