    A Spark of Courage

    Emma pulled up in her old blue Toyota and looked at the dingy, sad, little single story floor bungalow on the south side of Vancouver.

    The neighborhood was a comfortable middle class community with tall cherry trees that lined the streets, and a combination of well tended homes all within the last fifty years with one exception, her little house.

    It had worn cream stucco walls with two short cement stairs leading to a pealing brown door that matched the trim on the house. The front flowerbeds against the front of the house were over grown and the side ones had large untrimmed bushes. It did have a bright red metal roof that looked in good shape really made the house look odd. It almost looked ashamed as it sat there dwarfed between to newer large homes on either side of it.

    I guess this little dump is home now.

    Her car shuddered, shook, and backfired as she turned it off. It was getting worse. Emma sat there for a minute and started it up again. It started, but backfired and shook so hard it frightened her. She knew it was breaking down but she didn’t have the money to fix it. Now it sounded like it was going to blow up with her in it.

    She sighed. Maybe the house wasn’t as bad as it looked. It had been Aunt Ruth’s, and she had lived here until about three years ago. Actually the house looked like it hadn’t really been touched in about three years.

    It was hers now. This was going to home sweet home for quite a while. First thing she needed was to move in and then get a job. No, she chided herself, the first thing she needed was a job.
