Chapter 1

The drive into the small town of Sugarbay was hauntingly eerie at this time of day. The sun was yet to rise, and the bay’s fog was making its way over the town.  Three weeks earlier, Anna had received news that her late aunt had willed her an old house on the bayfront. So after securing a job at the local high school, Anna was pleased to be moving out of the city. But, as she drove down the main street of town, memories from her childhood came rushing back; The ice cream shop on the corner is where she had her first kiss, the coffee shop next door is where she had her first job. Life was simpler back then, she thought to herself.

Anna was currently on her way to the old house she had inherited from her aunt; it was on the far side of town where almost nobody lived. Situated on the beach, the house was surrounded by trees and forest on one side, while small waves lapped the shore at the front of the house. Anna knew she would have a lot of work to do at the old house, but, luckily for her, she had managed to secure herself a job during summer break. So she was off until school began.
