    Part One

    Jane Langford was a witch.

    The whole town of Seleby knew it. But of course no one would say it. At least, not anywhere where Langford might hear which, for all they knew, could be anywhere. 

    Jane Langford’s house was up the hill, at the very top of the cliff overlooking the sea. Hers was the only house on the hill, the rest of the village situated cozily in the valley beneath it. They could see the manor, Langford House, no matter what part of the village they were in, it was so high up. It loomed over them, watching. Listening.

    Anna watched it as she carried her basket through the market, down the street towards her house. Loaded with fresh vegetables, the basket weighed heavily on her arm as she passed through the evening air, the perpetual fog that entombed Seleby covering the houses down the street but leaving Langford House in perfect view.

    Trying to shake herself, she continued down the street. They all did the same thing—everyone in Seleby. Anna had seen her own mother do it dozens of times, along with the merchants in the market, her teachers, her friends…

    She reached up to her chest, her fingers brushing against the bronze medallion that hung from her neck. It was a semi-circle, a pie cut in half, the other half belonging to Ruby, who—

    No. This time she stopped in the street, closing her eyes and clenching her jaw. No, it had been two years. It didn’t do to dwell on things like that. Wherever Ruby was now, she was better off.
