This book is dedicated to my Grandmother for being my inspiration and always being there for me while growing up.

I would specially like to thank my beautiful wife Natasha for believing in me, her kindness, devotion and love and to my daughters a very big thanks for being patience with me, while I completed this book.

    Chapter 1 – The House

It was one of those dark cold days when Johnny asked his Granny if he could ride his scooter in the house. His Granny was busy baking bread in the old wood-burning stove which warmed the kitchen pleasantly. A small table with three stools stood in the center of the kitchen.

In line with the stove was an old kitchen wall unit filled with plates and cups. Hanging from the ceiling were a number of well-used copper pots and pans. Granny also had a bag of onions and garlic hanging next to the pots. Johnny pleaded with his Granny again if he could ride his scooter in the house. In an uncertain tone she said he can ride his scooter, but he must be careful not to damage anything. Johnny nodded and off he went smiling.

Johnny and his Granny lived in an unusual house. From the outside the house seemed much smaller than what it was. Some repairs were needed in and around the house. A few wooden planks on the porch needed to be nailed down. When the wind blew, those planks would flap around creating a creaking and banging sound.

The construction of the house was a mystery.  No one really knew by who or when it was built. The house was always in Johnny’s family, handed down from generation to generation. It was situated on the outskirts of a small town. The property was surrounded by large willow trees and a number of different bushes and shrubs. On the east side of the property was a winding river in which Johnny would swim during summer. The property also housed many different species of small animals (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods).

The closest neighbour was about thirty minutes away. Not many people visited there. On the odd occasion the postman would deliver a package for Granny.  Johnny did not have many friends besides his school friends.  The house had two and a half floors. Between the ground and 2nd floor was Johnny’s room. His Granny’s room was on the ground floor. All the rooms on the 2nd floor were locked; that part of the house was not used.

The dining room was filled with antique furniture. It had that old musty odour old houses usually have. In front of the windows were heavy long crushed velvet drapes which had not been washed for some time. The flooring was tiled with old black and white ceramic tiles, which had a few cracks and chips. The walls needed a coat of paint and, in some places, the paint had peeled. The colour of the paint had faded from a white to a dirty greyish colour.

Against one of the walls was a huge fireplace, which had not been used for years. On the mantelpiece above the fireplace were a number of old brass plates with different coats of arms. Next to the fireplace stood a large walnut grandfather clock with a brass face and chimes. You could hear the ticking of the clock as you entered the room. Every hour the clock would chime.

In the other corner was a large glass display unit. In the display unit were a few old porcelain plates with dead Queens and Kings faces on. It must have taken many years to collect all these plates. In the center of the room was a large bulky wooden table with two large chairs, one at the head and one at the tail end of the table. On either side of the table were two large benches. Ten people could
