Ruby Eagle, known to her close friends as Ruby Flare, was an international hero, a diminutive but fierce hummingbird. She stretched out her hand, just this once, to gently touch the orange-and-yellow sleek, tight-fitting uniform she used to wear.

She loved the way the red sparkly accent fabric at the throat shimmered in the light. It looked full of life. Ready to go. She ran her hand over the smooth, hard metal surface of her rocket pack with its green leather harness and wondered if she would ever use it to fly again.

She eyed the smaller uniform next to hers. It was green and blue, with the same deep red throat. Her greatest wish was that her daughter Anna would take her place as a Hummingbird, an elite division of the Atlantean War Eagles, but Anna was completely against the idea. She didn’t want to even hear the old stories and legends of the great Atlanteans and their history.

Ruby closed the shatterproof, sparkling clean glass case, turned, and slowly limped away, trying not to lean on her smooth red arbutus cane as she stepped back.

It had been a long time since she had been in her secret space. Her large, hidden workroom contained her uniforms, weapons, and computers. It was an area about twelve feet by eighteen feet, a good-sized room specifically designed to have it’s own private entrance besides the one in her closet—two of them in fact, one from a balcony and the
