Introduction: The history of smoking and how my father quit the natural way.
Smoking. It’s hard to believe now, but in the 1940s and 1950s, people thought smoking was good for you – even doctors! Tobacco companies explained how cigarette smoking would calm the nerves, suppress the appetite and even boost the immune system. We know today that this is flawed thinking, but people really did think smoking was okay. It’s no wonder so many people gave it a try and became addicted.
Advertisers saw the financial potential in touting these lies and soon began using everything from print advertisements to the movie screen to draw in new customers. Women were high on their list of potential consumers. While the Marlboro Man graced billboards to make men who smoked appear more manly
, actresses like Lauren Bacall showcased sex appeal with a cigarette pressed to her lips.
Advertisements spanned women’s magazine’s like Ladies Home Journal and Life magazine advocating smoking as a way to keep that slim figure and be more attractive. Smoking wasn’t just good for you (so they claimed), it made you fashionable and trendy.
Fast forward a few decades, and suddenly smokers became the pariahs of society. No longer considered in vogue, smokers were banned from most public places in the 1990s. So, what happened? How did something that doctors once encouraged people to do suddenly become taboo, disgusting, and unhealthy? The truth came out. Smoking is a danger – and it is addictive. People were dying from its long-term affects and society as a whole wanted the plague to stop.
The first inclination that smoking was bad for us came in 1964, when the U.S. Surgeon General required a formal warning on cigarette packages declaring that smoking is a health hazard. Since his report, few issues have been debated more in the United States than the idea that smoking is unhealthy. There are many that will yell and protest that there is no proof and that they’re fine, so it can’t be that bad. Then there are others that took the new information and research to heart, proving that smoking is not
