    LITTLE WHITE LIES

You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor. Exodus 20:16

Sadie polished a green apple against her white apron and watched the boy through the one-way glass of the break room at the grocery. Sarah’s little Sam, a younger brother, was roaming the aisles with the other non-Amish, non-Mennonite transplant, Leah, having ridden in the buggy with Amos Gunden into town.

Roxanne, so pregnant now that she looked about to burst, waddled beside Amos, somewhere on the other end of the store, somewhere between fresh produce and pies, buying things that Roxanne should be making herself, no doubt, while the children misbehaved and wrecked Sadie’s good work. It seemed to Sadie that the outsiders shouldn’t be welcomed, and she was being called upon to do the Lord’s holy work in keeping all of them all in line. She couldn’t stand that both Amos and John, good men—long standing in the community—had brought new women to the small town to form families. There were plenty of traditional communities to choose from in order to find a wife that didn’t involve any true Englishers in Sadie’s mind, and little white lies were worth risking in order while saving the community from undesirables.

Sadie approached the children from the back room, sneaking up the best she could, considering her size, and the small ones seemed oblivious to her
