image-placeholderAdam
As Adam walked across the office, the late evening sun filtered through the window. It reminded him that months of work remained before Christmas and the end of his yearly tasks. With a sigh, he crumpled into the chair behind the big mahogany desk and sunk his head into his hands.
Months! How was he going to survive four more months of this? Sean worked one night a year delivering presents. Ben spent the last two months of the year supervising what they called, ‘the contract crew’, the team of actors hired to play Santa at every mall each year. Michael didn’t do anything for the family business. He had a big fancy job off in the city somewhere, not at all Christmas related. But Adam was stuck, year-round, monitoring the naughty and nice list.
It was the most boring job ever. You just sat there all day and watched people; marking on the list if they’re good or bad and then you went to bed. The next day was exactly the same, all day, every day, all year. He wanted action. He wanted adventure, but his oldest brother Sean, the one in charge since dad died, said no. Adam knew that was Sean’s way of saying he wasn’t man enough for anything but a desk job. His brothers considered Adam the runt of the litter, even though he wasn’t what most would call small, just smaller than his herculean brothers.
Rubbing his eyes, he resigned himself to a night of watching the feeds, confirming what the list already knew. He turned them on. One by one, the screens covering the front wall sparked to life with images of people from around the world.
Everything was in real time. The person helping someone across the street, nice list. That little girl stealing a toy from the boy, naughty list. Of course, the list was an aggregation of all those moments. But, as he pulled out the list to check for the two he had just watched, he noticed the list was already marked for both of them. Nice for the first, naughty for the second.
Couldn’t they get someone else to do this? When his dad had been Santa, he’d done the list checking, the present delivery, and had managed the contract crew all by himself. Adam was pretty sure he hadn’t done that by sitting at this desk everyday watching these damned feeds.
His eyes flicked to the next one. The screen was dark. That was odd, generally the feed stopped when someone went to sleep. Yes, the song said he sees you when you’re sleeping
but there was nothing to monitor when people were sleeping. Why in the world would it be showing a dark room? He hit a button on the huge remote, spreading the image across the whole wall to investigate further.
It was hard to see, but those looked like black bed sheets. Man, someone needed to learn to make their bed in the morning, that thing was a mess. With his current foul mood, he was tempted to mark the person as naughty just for that small indiscretion, but the candy canes and smiling portraits in his father’s office reminded him of the spirit of Christmas.
Dad would have killed him for updating the list like that. Reluctantly he gave them another chance.
Rap. Rap. Rap.
Adam sprang out of the chair, finally a chance for some excitement.
Rap. Rap. Rap.
Whoever it was clearly had no patience.
Coming.
Adam called inches from the door.
A snigger drifted under the solid oak door.
Sean.
Hand inches from the ornate brass handle, Adam froze contemplating returning to the desk and letting Sean wait there forever.
Are you going to open the door? Or do you need a little more time to finish up?
The laughter got louder, and he recognized not just Sean, but his other brothers as well.
Ripping open the door, Adam stared them down, his lips already parted with a comeback.
The giant, blonde hair, blue eyed, wall of muscle that was Sean cut him off.
What’s up little bro, you finished and cleaned up that quick? That’s got to be a letdown.
His gaze slipped down to Adam’s crotch to emphasize the joke.
The laughter from Ben and Michael
