he sun’s rays glared down on unsuspecting Ethiopians and a certain Briton, burning on their skins with a temper that could only be soothed by sunscreen and something cold.
Asher sipped on a bottle of cold water as he walked down the narrow roads of Kazanchis to his apartment complex, his eyes covered from the sweltering sun by dark shades. At 6:25 pm, the sun had begun setting, hues of a violent red, a harsh orange and muted yellows filling the sky beautifully, making Asher pull out his smartphone to take a picture. It was a habit picked up after his job started taking him around Africa. He took a picture of everything, never letting a noteworthy moment pass him by without a picture being taken for remembrance.
Passers-by stared at him with judgmental looks in their eyes, shaking their heads at the overly enthusiastic Ferengi who thought he could fit in, just by walking amongst them and sometimes speaking their language badly.
Asher, however, wouldn’t be put down, waving and bowing slightly to whoever cared to look his way. It didn’t take long until he could see the apartment complex, and he let out a deep breath, instantly feeling relieved.
Master Asher, won’t you buy today?
the wide-lipped fruit seller opposite the complex called to him in her loud, gritty voice, making him wince as he attempted to enter the building stealthily. Cursing under his breath, he put on a smile and turned to her.
Not today, Nyala. I haven’t finished the bananas I got yesterday.
He informed with forced laughter, waving the woman before shutting the glass doors behind him.
