    CHAPTER EIGHT

Jordan didn’t seem surprised.  He also didn’t seem put out, or amused.  In fact, he seemed as if he’d been expecting this.

Look, I said, voice stern.  I raised my eyebrows at him.  I’ve got a right to know who I’m dealing with.  And we can’t move forward without getting you pre-approved, in any case.

He glanced around my little office, as if checking we were really alone, before returning his gaze to my face.  Sure, he said. I understand.  And you’re right: I wasn’t completely honest with you, and I apologize for that.

What’s the reason for it?  It came out sounding a little curt, but I didn’t really care.

My real name is Jordan Winsome-Bradshaw, he said.  He smiled, as if he didn’t need to say more.  Still, after a moment, he added, Thirty years old, as if it was an afterthought – unless it was a joke.

Winsome ... ?  I began.  But I didn’t need to finish it, or repeat it.

Everyone in the country with half an education knows the Winsome-Bradshaw family. America’s had more than one Senator Winsome, Governor Bradshaw, Admiral Winsome-Bradshaw... Their name is everywhere: in politics, publishing, real estate, even entertainment.

Now it was obvious why he hadn’t given me his real name at first. Still, he explained: We’re always wary of being taken advantage of.  Because of our wealth, and, well... prominence.

No, no, I said, hastily.  I understand.

It’s just easier, you know?  If people don’t bring all the baggage that comes along with our kind of ... notoriety... into the start of every relationship – business relationship, I mean, he added, as if as an afterthought.

    Sure, of course,
