CHAPTER TWENTY

I took a right on Abercrombie Street, and gave a quick glance into the rearview mirror to see if the town car was still on my tail. 

Affirmative.

I turned again. And again.

After four consecutive turns, there couldn’t be any doubt.  The car was definitely following me.

I turned left onto Maurice Drive, another residential street, and hit the accelerator.  I glanced into the rearview to see the town car still holding my tail. Then I glanced back at the windshield –

—and my body almost froze with panic. A moving truck was double-parked in front of one house, nearly blocking the entire street.  And a red Honda was coming around the other side of the truck, right at me. 

I stepped on the gas and sped past the truck, just in time to miss hitting the red Honda head-on.  The Honda’s brakes screeched angrily, and honked furiously as I sped past. Then it continued on its way, driving past the truck itself – and temporarily blocking the black town car chasing me. 

This seemed like my opportunity to shake my tail. I took it, by making a hard right on Jameson Place, and speeding on much too fast to the next intersection.  Ignoring the stop sign and hoping for the best, I slid around the corner in a broad left turn and pushed on down Davis Street.

A glance into the rearview mirror brought me a little charge of exhilarated accomplishment. I’d lost my pursuers. 

My excitement was subsumed by a sense of relief. Now, though, all I really wanted to do was get home.

Or, on second thought, maybe I needed to get to a police station. Or...What was I supposed to do, in such a situation? I realized I didn’t
