Christopher Mentzer

Having read the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, and all fantasy books by David Eddings, Chris took a stab at Fantasy with minimal success.  He even attempted Science Fiction with a couple of buddies while in college. The bottom line was, he lacked discipline and the desire to stick with any one project. All that would change in 2005, because in November of that year, Chris entered his first writing challenge held by the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) website. Although the goal was 50,000 words, he obtained his personal goal of 25K, which went on to be the foundation of book 1 of The Askinar Towers Trilogy. He later wrote foundations for books 2 and 3 in ’07 and ’09 respecitvely. His inspiration for the towers books came from John DeChancie’s Castle Perilous series and Doctor Who’s Paradise Towers. Chris lives in Mesa, AZ. He is currently employed in the retail industry working as a personal shopper. In his spare time, when not writing or stalking the social media streams, Chris loves to read books by fellow indie authors.

    About the Author

    Dream Girl

Young man, I want to speak to your supervisor. The woman who addressed Brett rode one of the store’s electric carts. A few items sat within the cart’s built-in basket together with her cane.

Our department manager is on vacation, Brett said with a warm smile. I’m in charge today. The young man wore a white apron and had built a display for oranges.

The woman gave him a narrow-eyed look then nodded. Your flyer states that you have 6 oz. blueberries on sale for $1.99, but there are only 12 oz. containers on the shelf. Is this some kind of trick? Forcing me to buy the non-sale item?

No ma’am, it’s not a trick. Our delivery arrived late and we’re in the process of getting the merchandise out as quickly as we can. Behind her, Simon exited the backroom pushing a cart fill with fruit. His coworker was a thin tall teenager with a freckled face. The boxes of 6oz. blueberries sat on top. Simon, would you help this customer pick out some blueberries? She would like the 6 oz. containers.

Certainly. Simon smiled. Right over here, ma’am.

The woman eyed Brett again and then drove her cart over to Simon.

And you have a lovely day as well, you ol’ hag, Brett muttered.

You’ll have to forgive my grandmother.

Brett turned. A tall stunning redhead stood before him. Oh, crud! Did she hear what I just said? She clutched a carton of eggs and a loaf of bread. Her smoky green eyes captured his full attention.

It’s no problem at all. Brett smiled, as he nervously wiped his clean hands on his apron. It’s just part of the job in the grocery business.

Lisa, let’s go, called the old woman.

Coming Grandma. She turned back to Brett. If you’re not doing anything this afternoon, I’d like to buy you dinner.

D-d-dinner? He wiped his hands again.

Nothing fancy, I was thinking of Jerry’s Deli on Hampton. My treat.

I know the place! How about I meet you there at five?

Better make it six. Grandma watches her programs at five and I’ll need to get ready. She pulled out a slip of paper and scrawled her phone number on it. My name’s Lisa, by the way.

    I’m Brett.

She handed him the paper. Call me if you’re going to be late. She stepped off then turned back and kissed him on the cheek.

What I miss? Frank’s shirt was partially untucked and his part of his large belly was hanging out. He threw away the breakfast sandwich wrapper and then wiped his greasy hands on his shirttail.

Everything. Simon abandoned his fruit cart and hurried over, his
