Christopher Mentzer

Having read the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, and all fantasy books by David Eddings, Chris took a stab at Fantasy with minimal success.  He even attempted Science Fiction with a couple of buddies while in college. The bottom line was, he lacked discipline and the desire to stick with any one project. All that would change in 2005, because in November of that year, Chris entered his first writing challenge held by the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) website. Although the goal was 50,000 words, he obtained his personal goal of 25K, which went on to be the foundation of book 1 of The Askinar Towers Trilogy. He later wrote foundations for books 2 and 3 in ’07 and ’09 respecitvely. His inspiration for the towers books came from John DeChancie’s Castle Perilous series and Doctor Who’s Paradise Towers. Chris lives in Mesa, AZ. He is currently employed in the retail industry working as a personal shopper. In his spare time, when not writing or stalking the social media streams, Chris loves to read books by fellow indie authors.

    About the Author

    For the Love of Cassie

Good afternoon, this is your captain speaking. We’ll be landing in Reno airport in about ten minutes. The local time is 4:15pm and the temperature is around 94. For those of you who have connecting flights, please proceed to the nearest flight board and locate your gate from there. We’ll be on hand to assist you in making your connections in a timely manner. We thank you very much for choosing National Airlines and hope you will fly with us again real soon. {pause} Attendants, please prepare for landing.

Travis sat up and looked out the window. He had short dirty-blond hair, was of medium height and build, though he had the arms of a football player. One of things he learned early on in veterinary school was that he would have to wrestle the occasional dog to give it a shot or bath. As far as the dog was concerned, it was basically the same thing. He looked towards the distance and saw a mountain range and a large lake. This was his first time to Reno. He’d been to Las Vegas, but always wanted to visit the ‘Biggest Little City in the World’ because of its history.

His girlfriend, Kylie, gripped the arms of her seat to the point of turning her knuckles white. Her shoulder length blonde hair fell partly into her face; covering her brown eyes and dazzling smile. The smile, though was not on her face, but instead a look of terror.

Travis was still looking out the window as he addressed her. What should we do first? Eat, gamble, or sightsee. What do you think?

I want to land first, Kylie replied.

He turned towards her. Flying is the safest mode of travel, plus the fastest. If we drove up here, we’d lose out on half of our weekend together.

No one I know has fallen fifteen thousand feet getting out of their car, she replied.

Look, let’s just enjoy this weekend. Vicki arranged it with both of our jobs to work an early shift today and then work a late shift Monday, so we could spend the whole weekend in Reno.

What’s wrong with Vegas? Couldn’t your sister afford that?

    What’s that supposed to mean?

Kylie licked her dry lips and swallowed hard. Nothing, I’m just trying to concentrate on the plane so we land safely.

It’s not going to crash if you think about something else, said Travis.

It could, you don’t know that.

Travis smiled in amusement. Am I to believe that your concentration is what keeps the plane in the air and helps us to land safely?

Kylie nodded slowly in response; her neck muscles were tense
