About the Stories
We all have personal stories to tell. The stories that follow were written by students in my 10-week training and mentoring program, Fearless Freelance Writing.
This is the second Snapshots book, and I hope there will be many more as more writers complete the program. As in Snapshots: Book I, some of the stories here in Book 2 will tickle your funny bone while others will warm your heart. Either way, you’ll probably recognize something of yourself and your own life in every story. We hope you enjoy these snapshots from real life.
Each of the authors here is continuing to hone her skills with a blog of her personal stories, so please read their work online and follow their careers and life travels. You’ll find the link to each author’s blog in the bios at the back of this book.
Happy reading!

My Dark and Not-So Handsome Roomie
Pamela Greenhalgh Hamilton
I think every female traveler dreams, at least once in her life, of meeting that tall, dark, handsome stranger on vacation.
It finally happened to me on a recent trip to Australia.
Well, at least the dark part. My roommate
in Port Douglas, Australia, certainly wasn’t tall and I wouldn’t call him handsome either.
After an uneventful flight from Melbourne and a seemingly endless shuttle bus ride from the Cairns Airport to Port Douglas, I happily checked into my vacation apartment, unpacked, changed clothes, and set out to explore.
I returned to my room, tired and with a full tummy, ready to call it a night.
Once I changed into my PJs, I poured myself a glass of wine, plopped down on the couch, ready to explore the wonders of Australian TV.
That’s when I saw him, on the wall, above the kitchen cabinet.
The biggest, blackest spider I have ever seen in my life. He had to be at least three or four inches in diameter. No way was I getting close enough to measure him, so you will just have to take my word on this.
I somehow managed not to scream my lungs out, ‘cause as you know, everything in Australia can kill you.
And this was a really big spider.
For the next twenty minutes or so, we participated in the Great Australian Standoff.
I watched him. He watched me. At least I think he did. Again, there was no way was I getting close enough to see whether or not he actually had eyes.
I didn’t move.
He didn’t move.
I finally realized that if I wanted maintenance to come and remove my hairy friend, I had to call the night number sooner rather than later.
Sarah answered on the second ring.
I introduced myself and explained my problem.
Will you send someone over to remove it?
I concluded.
There was a long pause.
I’m sorry, but we don’t have anyone available to do that,
Sarah said.
It was my turn to pause. No one available? There was a huge spider on my wall. What did she mean, there was no one available to remove it? Didn’t she know that everything in Australia can kill you?
I am pretty sure spiders fall under the category of everything.
But it is really big. I’ve never seen a spider this big,
I insisted.
He is probably more afraid of you than you are of him,
Sarah said.
"I doubt it. I’m pretty sure that is physically
