    Prologue

William Bernard V stood at the helm of his large ship. He brought his children just as his father had brought him when the time had come for him to retire. Unfortunately, his children would have a larger problem than he did—due to the fact his father was a selfish bastard. William was certain his life was going to be forfeit when they learned of everything.

William had three children, a set of twins, Macon and Makenzie, and his youngest William VI. They would take over the secret his family held and the burden they bore. He was almost to the place where they would drop the supplies over the edge of the ship for the Meridian.

Hey, kids, can we talk for a few minutes? Senior said and waited while his children good-naturedly complained about having to come out here with him so late.

Dad, what’s up? I mean, you would never have brought us out here for no reason, William asked.

You are right. First let me say, I love you all, I am so sorry I have kept a secret from you for so long, but you will understand when I tell you, he said, eyeing each a his children.

Dad, are you okay? Makenzie asked.

Depends. I have a pirate story to tell you, Senior said.

The three of them groaned until William began, and then they listened intently. He laid out what his ancestors did and promised, when he got to his father, William hesitated.

My father was a selfish bastard. The three of you know I never had a good relationship with him. When I decided it was time to pass on the family secret and have you three take over the business, I had to tell you. So I gathered the papers and inside I found this, William said and held up a packet.

Hang on, Dad. You are telling me, our family has been protectors of an alien race for decades, and we are supposed to not call the mental hospital and check you in? Macon said firmly.

William snorted. I know you are having a hard time with this, which is why I brought you out here. You will see. First, let me say I have unfortunately left you with the task of making sure that we continue to protect them, my father was going to sell them out. All for the price of my mother. It disgusted me to find out that he was given a woman. The only thing I can say is he apparently loved her for a time before she died giving birth to me. He didn’t know she was going to die and when she did, he refused to help them any further. We have to make sure the people my father made the deal with never find the coordinates we have. Each time we come out here, we are taking a chance. We have to be more diligent.

Dad, I have to agree with Macon, Makenzie said. What are you saying about grandfather? Who was our grandmother? Who was grandfather going to help?

She was a captive from the Meridian planet. We are descendants of the Meridian as well. William dropped the bomb and they all stood stunned. We can talk more after the drop, it is almost time.

He led his children out to the deck of the boat, there were three large pallets waiting to be dropped. When they reached the place, he asked them to help him.

Dad, do they know our grandfather betrayed them? William yelled as they got the pallets ready.

We will talk more in a while, Senior said and nodded to them to drop the first pallet.

All of the children watched and waited. When they saw the first man appear out of nowhere and wave, they sucked in a deep breath, then when they saw him dive back under the water and a large tailfin flapped the water’s surface, Makenzie fainted.

Casius floated at the edge of the ship and heard what the young man yelled. Anger pulsed through him as he thought about Bernard’s family betraying them. He needed to get his men home with the packages and make sure they had not been followed.

Before he dove under the ocean, he pulled out his communicator they used on the surface and made a call. Vick was going to need to cut his vacation short. The Meridian had a yacht they secured a long time ago, it was used for the men to come to the surface when they wanted to and travel and gather materials they needed.

Vick had been on the boat for weeks, thankfully he was in the water so he didn’t have to worry about his Meridian side becoming sick without the salt water. But he was still one of the few men like Casius who had not found any mate, and therefore tended to be a loner.

Recently, since their leaders had found their mate, many of the men had become restless, mostly because they were given hope, and after so many years it was hard to be patient knowing you could have a mate somewhere close.

Casius thought of Gabby, when he first saw her he had known, and damned if it hadn’t been hard to stay away from her. She was beautiful, and perfect. Gabby and her sister had long jet-black hair, and while Sam had green eyes, Gabby had blue. Her perfect bow mouth called to him to claim it, but he couldn’t because until they found their third he could not do a damn thing about it. It was the Meridian way, they had to mate together, or their female could be barren. Now they had a chance to grow and expand their race, this would never do.

Every day was a battle for him to stay away from his mate, even though her best friends seemed to find it humorous to torture him daily. With a sigh, he looked one last time at the Bernard’s ship and frowned. He felt something besides rage, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Something on that ship made him uneasy, and he was going to find out what. Hopefully his leaders would allow him to do what he had to.

    Chapter One

Xander and Des stood in the meeting room of the Meridian, they were miles below the surface of the ocean but the anger in the room was threatening to swell and burst to the surface in a storm no one wanted to explain. They had been betrayed, the men they thought were helping them had in fact been keeping a secret from them, one that could change their lives forever.

The King’s house was now the main meeting place of the Meridian. They had a home now, and this was their headquarters, it beat the almost too neat and surgical old quarters they had. When they first came to Earth they built the city under the ocean to match what they had left. The leaders had not taken their rightful house until they found their third. They also shared the mansion with their closest men and their mates, each of them having a wing making the house the main building once again, as it had been in the past. The King’s house had always been the hub and now it was once again.

They had hidden in the ocean for so long it seemed like nothing could touch them, knowing that any moment someone could find them and destroy the life they made here was frightening. Their race had already been practically wiped out by the Hopis, they had already accepted they would never be able to repopulate their race when the unthinkable happened; their leaders found their mate. Now the hope they would be able to carry on was going to be crushed if what they had learned last night was true.

If they would have given away our coordinates we would already be dead, you know it, and I know it, Des said reasonably. The men in the room frowned but didn’t disagree. The three women sat silently at the table, each of them thinking about how they could help the situation. They had come here on a fluke, they had been traveling and during a storm lost their boat. The men had rescued them and brought them here. Then they discovered they were Meridian mates, something none of them expected.

They had then gone on to discover that not only were they Meridian mates, but they were also descendants of the Hopis as well. Which really could only mean one thing. The Hopis held some of their people captive and used them to breed. They needed to know who else was out there, and if they could save them. Because once a Meridian female was bred with a Hopis, they would die in childbirth. Sick and wrong, but they had to have another plan along with this. Just because they were breeding, it didn’t make sense; they could use a human and keep them alive. Why were they breeding like this?

However, if what they say is true, and they are truly Meridian descendants then we need to figure out what to do, because they could be discovered at any moment and then what? We could lose all we have worked for, Casius said and looked around the table.

Casius had already done the research they needed. When they had returned last night with the information of the betrayal they had dug into the Bernard family tree. It had been disconcerting at the time to see how they had missed this bit of information even after all these years.

What exactly do the papers say? Xander asked.

"Their great grandmother, appeared suddenly in 1808, we can’t find any information exactly where she came from, she bore her husband one son and then died. All information points to her being one of the captive females, there are falsified doctor reports that are vague and misleading and other documents that were issued
