    CHAPTER ONE

Waking up early after a night of passion with Prince Nicolaus Laurenz was always difficult for Kyle, even though he was the prince’s valet and it was a duty he could not avoid by sleeping in.

It didn’t help that the prince and heir to the tiny, wealthy European country of Folkelan was still sprawled on the huge, four-poster bed, snoring softly. Folkelan might be smaller than Luxembourg, but it was a nation with a long, rich history and a dignified royal family stretching back hundreds of years. But right now it was hard to think of Nicolaus as a stately, regal prince after all the filthy, oh-so-good sex they’d had last night…and the fact that he was naked and snoring.

Weak dawn light filtered through the bedchamber’s huge windows. From the palace, Kyle Dumont could see the city of Stromburg stirring to life along the country’s small slice of the Danube River. If you ignored the cars in the distance and a few other signs of technology, the city’s narrow cobblestone streets looked as if they still existed in the Middle Ages.

He had never regretted moving here to serve the prince. Everyone back home in Los Angeles had believed him crazy when he’d first moved from California to England to train as a butler. Now he was employed as a valet to the prince of the Laurenz royal family, living in a palace, and sleeping in the prince’s bed.

Kyle grinned as he remembered the events of last night. The prince had dismissed him for the night as his valet, then enthusiastically pulled him into bed as his lover. Even though Nicolaus was his employer and European royalty, a fierce love had sprung up between them soon after Kyle had become his valet. Perhaps Kyle was often sleep-deprived as a result of the prince’s lovemaking, but that was Kyle’s burden to bear.

And how he loved to bear it.

His cock began to stiffen as he remembered the prince’s hands all over his body last night, the feeling of Nicolaus’s cock thrusting inside him. Those hot kisses from the prince’s lips along his back, his inner thighs, and then the man’s beautiful mouth on his cock…

He was fully hard now as he struggled to pull on his trousers. Getting dressed quickly was always a challenge with an erection. He smirked and glanced at the prince again, knowing Nicolaus would’ve laughed good-naturedly at his predicament…and those stunning gray eyes of his would’ve flashed with lust. Those eyes always made Kyle’s knees weak. Yes, those eyes could be intense when Nicolaus was playing the role of royal prince at official state ceremonies, but Nicolaus never looked at him with anything but warmth, love, and an endless amount of desire.

He paused in getting dressed, distracted by the gorgeous sight of his lover sprawled on the big featherbed. His naked torso was bare to the world, the sheet rumpled around his waist, barely covering his manhood. But Kyle was amused and delighted to see the prince’s cock was standing up beneath the sheet, jutting upward bold as you please. The man’s endurance was staggering. After coming twice last night, one would’ve expected the prince’s royal cock to be as exhausted as Kyle was right now.

From the sight of that proud erection, that was definitely not the case.

He finished dressing, his own erection straining against the front of his pants. As much as he wanted to crawl back onto the bed and kiss his way across Nicolaus’s broad, tanned chest, licking at his nipples, then teasing the prince’s full lower lip so gently with his teeth, he couldn’t. It was time for him to put on his uniform and do his job.

Shaking his head, he turned away from the tempting sight of the sleeping Nicolaus before it was too much for him. He had work to do. Nicolaus had an official event later today celebrating Stromburg market day in the historic center of the city. Kyle needed to make sure the prince was impeccably dressed in official regalia and looking his absolute best. It might not be as important or exciting a job as being a firefighter or one of the royal bodyguards in the security detail, but Kyle took pride in doing it right. He could be happy and fulfilled doing this for the rest of his life. It was enough.

He paused, frowning. No, that wasn’t completely true. It was not enough. Because he loved the prince with heart, body, and soul. It was only enough if he could have Nicolaus.

He knew the prince was expected to marry someone else eventually and continue the royal line. There had been murmurings around the palace that King Friedrich Laurenz and Queen Heida Laurenz wanted the prince to settle down, marry, and produce an heir.

It was a foolish pipedream to believe Kyle and Nicolaus would be together forever. At least officially. Their love would always be hidden from public view, nothing more than whispers and rumors and stories in trashy tabloids. Kyle’s blood was not noble, Old-World European. He was not the heir of some elite, wealthy family. And of course, he physically couldn’t give the Laurenz family an heir. Folkelan might be a constitutional monarchy, but the looming possibility of Nicolaus’s political marriage made Kyle’s heart clench with dread. He knew he should simply be grateful for what he had. Grateful for these incredible nights spent with the prince he loved and the memories he would always cherish…

That’s enough moping, he scolded himself. You have a job to do. Do it.

Now dressed, he moved back toward the bed. Once again, the temptation to climb onto the bed and draw away the silk sheets, take Nicolaus’s cock in his hand and work it with long, slow strokes, was almost too much to deny. But he had wasted enough time this morning already. The dawn sunlight was growing stronger. He needed to prepare Nicolaus for the day.

He hid a smile as he leaned over the bed. Your Highness, it is time to rise.

Nicolaus groaned, and one eyelid opened the barest crack. You are obviously mad, the prince replied in accented English. His voice was roughened from sleep. It’s barely midnight.

If you would open your eyes, my prince, you would see it is past dawn.

Then it is a good thing my eyes remain closed.

And if you listen, you can hear the morning birdsong outside the palace.

The prince pulled a pillow over his face. His voice was muffled. Lies. I hear nothing. Now let me sleep.

Your cock knows it is morning as well, he said, grinning. It’s up already.

Nicolaus groaned again and cursed softly in German. Folkelan was east of Germany and north of Austria, and the tiny nation spoke a dialect of German. Kyle’s German was poor but getting better the longer he stayed here. Most people also spoke English, including Nicolaus, who had studied in the States and earned a degree at Harvard.

When Nicolaus still didn’t get out of bed, Kyle climbed onto it and kissed him.

He shouldn’t have done it. He should be focused on his role as the prince’s valet, not his lover. He would wrinkle his butler uniform. He was risking having the prince pull him into another round of mind-blowing sex that would set them back hours.

    This kiss was a mistake.

But he simply couldn’t help himself.

Nicolaus opened his gorgeous gray eyes. "Mmm. That kiss gives me the perfect idea of what you could do to convince my cock—and me—to settle down and go back to sleep."

Tempted as I am, Your Highness, I must decline. You are due at the Historic Old Town Stromburg Market Ceremony later this afternoon. Also, the queen has requested your presence for lunch.

She probably wishes to pester me about finding a wife and giving her an heir. Nicolaus sighed. He sat up in bed, then looked down at his erection. A grin slowly spread across his handsome face as he met Kyle’s eyes again. How about I command you to climb into bed and sate my royal needs?

Again, I would love to, my prince, he began, and that was no lie either. The tight, hot ache of lust had pooled in his groin, distracting him. He wanted this man like no other. Which made it all the more bitter that he could never truly have him. But he pushed those thoughts away. But it is my duty to help you bathe and dress before court.

Nicolaus gave another grunt, but he did finally roll out of bed, only to stand there naked and still fully erect.

A shuddering intake of breath passed Kyle’s lips at the sight. The man was perfect. Sleek, short brown hair. Gray eyes the color of storm clouds. A smile as bright as gold. His cheeks were dark with stubble. His lips were full—the kind of lips that begged to be kissed. Nicolaus had a physical trainer, and his body was wrapped in muscle, his stomach flat, his chest broad, and his thighs corded with even more muscle. Oh, and that perfect cock jutting proudly from his body, long, with a dusky red head and dark pubic hair. Honestly, right now Kyle had to fight the urge to kneel down and worship it.

He didn’t need the prince’s ego getting any bigger than it already was, but he loved the sight of the man naked.

No, it was more than that. He loved the man, period. And that made being stuck as nothing more than his manservant all the more painful sometimes.

For the umpteenth time this morning, he pushed those kinds of thoughts away. What was wrong with him today? Usually, he didn’t brood over what he could and couldn’t have. Usually, he tried to take things as they came.

See something you like, Kyle? Nicolaus asked, his gray eyes flashing and a grin on his face.

Kyle bowed. Yes, my prince. You. He couldn’t help a sassy smile, even though his instructors at the butler college would’ve skinned him for it. Let me get your coffee and draw your bath. Heaven knows it was hard enough waking you from your slumber. I don’t want to risk you falling back asleep.

He headed into the main living area and to the high-end single-serve brewing station and made a steaming cup of coffee. He brought it to the prince, managed to keep himself from being distracted by Nicolaus as he pulled on silk boxer shorts from the clothing Kyle had already laid out.

Nicolaus took the coffee and waved Kyle away when he moved to help the prince dress. Give me a minute to finish waking up. Otherwise I might spill coffee on my clothes.

Kyle withdrew and headed into the large bathroom, impressed as always at its pristine white marble floors and the huge Jacuzzi-style tub with golden fixtures. He started the hot water and checked the monogrammed towels, straightening one. In the Stromburg Palace, even the towels were luxurious, wonderfully thick, made of the finest Egyptian cotton.

As the bath began to fill with steaming water, Kyle headed back into the prince’s bedchamber. The prince wasn’t in bed again, which was a good sign. The double doors to the private palace balcony were open. Kyle sighed, hoping the prince had at least covered his royal ass with something more than silk underwear before wandering outside.

He walked out into the cool morning air and the sunlight. Nicolaus stood at the balcony railing with his cup of coffee, looking out across the city toward the Danube River. Planters filled with flowers and small, decorative trees ran along the stone balcony railings, providing color. The royal crest and flag of Folkelan stirred in the cool morning breeze. Kyle moved beside him, wishing he didn’t have to pull the prince away, but the morning was moving on. There was plenty the prince needed to accomplish today.

Your Highness, pants would be preferable when wandering the balcony, Kyle said flatly. I’m sure the queen will appreciate your royal backside not appearing in the gossip rags and tabloids again.

    Nicolaus sighed
