Chapter 1

No. No. No. No. No. No!

This couldn’t happen. This can’t happen.

No. No way.

If I screamed, someone would probably come. The other couples would hear me.

But I couldn’t scream. My heart was in my throat. I could barely even breathe.

I backed away from Gaël, but he kept leaning forward. There was no way to go. I couldn’t escape. The boat started to rock underneath me, and I started to wonder what was worse: getting kissed, or falling into the lake?

Obviously, drowning wasn’t an option, but at the moment letting Gaël kiss me felt just as bad.

I can’t do this, I said. "I have a boyfriend. You know that. So I thought you understood…"

I put my hands up in front of me, trying to push Gaël away. But he grabbed them at the wrist and pulled me closer.

You keep talking on and on about this boyfriend of yours. That DuFour. But I always have the same question. If he’s so wonderful, why isn’t he here with you? What kind of man is he that he would leave you alone to get into a boat with another man? What’s the point in staying loyal to that kind of person?

Matt is –

I thought of what to say. He was worth it, wasn’t he? Yes. He had to be.

He’s –

My phone started to ring before I could finish. It was just enough to distract Gaël, and I used the opportunity to pair my hands away. I reached into my bag, hoping that one face would appear on the screen.

It somehow seemed to take an eternity to find the phone at the bottom of my messy purse. But there he was, Matt’s face smiling at me from before we got on the plane. It was like a sign.

Quickly, I showed Gaël my screen.

See? There he is. He’s probably worried about me, I said. My words were coming so quickly that my tongue was tripping over itself. "So, I have to go. Now. He’s calling me!"

I tried to pick up the phone, but the ringing stopped before I could answer. I tried dialing number, but I had no luck.

As IWell put down the phone, a sinking feeling came over me. Was this whole thing just going to start up again?

Don’t worry, Gaël said.

By now, he was on the other side of the boat again. The oars were in his hands. It was almost as if nothing had even happened between us.

I’m enough of a gentleman not to force myself on a woman, Gaël said. I know when to stop.

Yeah, right. Whether that was true or not (it wasn’t) I was happy to know that this whole thing was over. I just wanted to get off of the boat and get back to Matt.

The rest of the boat ride was silent. I didn’t have anything to say to Gaël, but he just kept looking at me with this strange smile on his face. What was that about?

Once we hit land, I was out of there.

Chapter 2

So here’s the thing, and don’t hate me for this, but on the subway ride back to Matt’s Château, I kept thinking about Gaël.

I couldn’t get him out of my mind.

I know. It’s stupid. It’s worse than that. It’s crazy.

Mom raised me to beat down any man who tried to make me do anything I didn’t want to. But I didn’t. I should’ve hated Gaël. Never wanted to see him again. Probably reported him as a dangerous individual to the police. But
