George Michael Babineau

I am a teacher, a writer and a dreamer. As a teacher, I love to share stories with others. The most important stories are, "how NOT to make the same mistakes I did." And thus begins my writing career. As a writer, I have compiled a massive amount of information, and when I find the time, I articulate these experiences, both positive and negative, and publish them in a TEFL Book. There are currently TWO volumes, with a 3rd in the works. Each highlights "HOW TO" make the life changing decision to live, work and play abroad, what requirements you need to be a Foreign Teacher, and most important "how to" get certified to teach abroad. Next, I share many stories about contracts I have had, and mistakes I made in balancing what was right for me, which brings me to my third point. As a Dreamer, I often tend to think the world revolves around me, and I am happy in my little bubble of a reality that I call my own world. But... If you don't accurately read and understand, and more important question the job offer or contract, you may be stuck in a situation that is not right for you. Learn from my mistakes, and enjoy a whole new world of opportunity. But this career choice isn't for everyone. There are strict requirements to process a legal working visa. And I tend to stick to those types of job offers and contracts. Just read the find print and consider all your options in your job offer, and ask a lot of specific questions that we cover in our books that relate to your living, working and playing environment.

Some interesting stuff, but specifics concerning working in China do not match my experiences over the last four years of teaching in the country.

Thank you for your interest in TEFL Teach and Travel 2. ‘Two, to, too…’ Symbolizing that this is the second book addressing many issues readers from the first book requested, and will answer in more detail here. Chapter One

So you wanna be a teacher, Eh?

Overall, the first major requirement of a TEFL Teacher in just about every opportunity in every country is you MUST be born in, and a resident/citizen (passport holder) of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. In order to obtain a legal work visa as a foreign teacher, this is each countries minimum requirement.

If you were born in India or the Philippines, for example and a resident/citizen (passport holder) of the USA, you will NOT be considered for employment (legally). If you do not meet this basic citizenship requirement, you will not be considered as a ‘native English speaker,’ and will not be employed as a ‘foreign expert.’

Don’t fret, there are plenty of jobs, and various working and business visas available that may be more suitable to your citizenship.

I know a Russian-American and a German-American who both enjoy living on the beaches of Thailand, working 20 hours a week at a public school earning 1,000 USD a month, and they love their life very much. One of them even works a second part time at a hospitality university teaching an additional 20 hours a week making an additional 800 USD a month. Their cost of living is extremely low, and they are often found in Fiji or Tahiti catching the most crushing waves. What lifestyle do you prefer? Teaching English as a Foreign Language can solve that mystery for you.

The next most basic requirement is you must hold a four year university degree, in any subject. Sure, your degree is in horticulture, and your experience is working in a factory until China bought your company and out-sourced all of the labor and production to China, and you lost your job. As long as you have a Bachelor degree, you can teach those souls in China before we are forced to learn Chinese!

With a four year degree in any English competency, salaries are higher, and with a Masters of anything, your salaries are even higher at most government schools, and especially universities.

The next visa requirement is by far, a teaching credential. While you most definitely do not have to be credentialed in your country as a certified teacher, at a minimum, you should hold an internationally recognized TEFL teaching credential. I suggest tefl-c.com as the most coveted and sought after online program. It is proctored by an international team of professionals, costs about 880 USD, and takes as little as two weeks, up to a month to complete in the comfort of your ‘jammies’ at home, or at your favorite coffee shop. Tefl-c.com offers the advanced practicum with modules to train you with the most effective methodologies that will prepare you for your new career of teaching English as a foreign language.

A professional CV (Curriculum Vitae), which is a standard for the academic world, and is extremely different from a resume as a resume conceals most discriminatory references. A CV will have your photo, your contact information of your permanent and current residence, your date of birth, your country of birth and citizenship with your passport information and expiration date. Seven years of documentable employment references must be accounted for as well as your complete educational history and accurate contact information.

There are some other requirements that you should have:

A professional email account. For example, jazzyjoe or drunkendebbie are probably not suitable email addresses that you want to relate to your professional ability to teach English to children. Create an email address with your first and last name. That is so important, but most people don’t realize your email account is so important.

Next, you will interview and communicate on Skype. You should also use your first and last name to ensure confidence in the interview process.

I caution everyone regarding the ease that employers have in making their own determinations of an applicant based two methods. If you are applying for a position with Disney English, before they even contact you, they will look at your application and its relevant merit, and then they will ‘Google’ your name, and look up your name on Facebook. You aren’t very difficult to find these days. If there are any improprieties, your application will probably be rejected. While they won’t discriminate in the USA for any protected class of citizen, they are conscious of the many requirements that a professional teacher must possess. If they didn’t do this, the parents with VPN (Virtual Private Network) access that are customers at your Disney English center will, as will your students and co-workers at your public high school. People are just nosey. They want to know more about you, before they get to know you.

Scanned copies of all your important official documents. A clear and readable digital copy of your passport picture page, if there is any questions, a clear and readable digital copy of your Driver License, State or Country ID card, and for more definitive residency investigation, they will require your original birth certificate.

Scanned copies of your Bachelor degree is unquestionably essential, and just in case, some employers require a sealed copy of your university transcripts. This is not so much for the school you will be working for, but for the immigration office that will process your Z working visa and residency permit.

Of course a scanned, signed letter of reference of your previous teaching experience. The Chinese immigration office, especially in a big city will verify all employment as far back as 7 years before approving a Z working visa.

While you will have a mandatory health check after your arrival in China, taking blood, urine and hair samples, an ultrasound of your insides, an ear and eye check as well as an EEG, blood pressure check, and a chest x-ray, you will be required to have a physical exam in your current country, with all documentation scanned for verification.

To improve the quality of teachers in China, in 2015 all teachers making application MUST have a police report scanned issued by at least the State department of Justice. In Korea, a very lengthy County, State and FBI criminal report must be obtained and submitted as scanned copies.

For a large company like Disney English, and most international High Schools in China, they require the scanned copies to process your application, but may require you to send your official, original documents with your signed offer letter and contract by overnight courier in order to obtain your air ticket. Once you have that, pack your bags, you are on your way to an exciting new geographically flexible lifestyle of your choosing!

A special tool I use often, http://www.xe.com, my favorite online currency converter, I compared what my salary would be like converting it to US Dollars, as that is the country I come from, it is the method of evaluating a bargain, as I base everything in a foreign country off the value of a US Dollar. If you are from a different country, I am sure you do the same thing in your currency.

My second year in China, I was offered, and accepted a 12,000 RMB per month salary, with free housing, free round trip airfare and a ten month contract. Summers were considered unpaid holidays. That’s approximately $2,000 USD. Not such a great salary you may think. We will talk in greater detail about evaluating a job offer, and a contract in detail in chapter three. But, for now, let’s just talk dollars.

There are so many things to consider besides your monthly salary. You need to weigh, or balance each of the aspects of your life, based on the comparison of
