for those of you who don’t just cruise (that is, almost everyone!)
High school’s different for everyone.
For a (very) few, it’s a breeze — few hassles and smooth sailing.
But let’s be real... for most teens, it takes adjusting. You’ve got a lot to get a handle on in a short space of time.
Fun? Yes.
All the time? No.
But can it be fulfilling? Absolutely!
High school years can seem very long and fraught with many troubles and stresses. So wherever you are right now with your journey into high school — whether you are about to leave middle school and begin your high school journey or you’re already halfway through, remember this important point: Many millions of people have indeed not only survived, but have thrived through high school over the years! They have come through the other end better prepared for life, and have made some awesome friends along the way!
Generally speaking, you will spend four years in high school (if you are coming from a junior high that includes 9th grade, then it will only be three years), so that is a very small percentage of your entire life!
It may seem like forever all the time, but honestly, before you can blink, you’ll be out in the workforce and living life on a much grander scale. So be positive. Remember high school is not the be all and end all. In most places, you’ve got to go. It’s compulsory, so why not just go ahead and give the experience your best!
I have been teaching first-year high school students for the better part of 20 years, and I must say, it is an absolute privilege and great fun (most of the time). So I hope that the advice and stories in this book will help you get through these years even better.
Right now, you might be getting ready to leave middle school and head off to the big leagues. Or it might have already started and you’re wanting some advice on managing the first years of this new adventure. Whatever your age and level of schooling right now, I’ve written this for you.
Enjoy this book! And enjoy high school!
Sharon
and do I really have to like anyone there?
So, what is the point of high school?
I hear you say. Good question, and one that is often asked by exasperated and stressed-out students across the nation. If you think that high school is invented purely to keep you out of the house during the daytime, you’re wrong. It’s not some conspiracy for parents to get out of baby-sitting!
There are actually so many reasons why high school should be a valuable experience. Sure, you may not realize all of those good points until you’re an adult. But then again, you might get a different view after reading this book. You may even enjoy your time in high school! Stranger things have happened.
relationships
One of the greatest benefits of high school is how it can help you hone your social skills. These skills will help you relate to a variety of different people and personalities, both of your own age group and with adults — like teachers, for example! That’s a good thing, and extremely helpful when you go into college or the workforce. In that adult world, you’ll need the skills to relate to a wide range of people.
Now, you can’t be expected to like everyone. That would be boring. And it’s not even possible. But getting along with people takes basic tolerance. In short, you do need to learn to cope with other people beyond a handshake or nod of the head. It isn’t always easy, but it can be one of the best lessons learned during your high school years.
commitment — seeing tasks through!
Another one of the benefits that can come from high school is the lessons learned from commitment — finishing something you started. This might be completing a science research assignment or attending a school sports carnival and running the mile, even when you don’t feel like it. Maybe you joined Student Council at the beginning of the year, and now no longer feel like giving up your lunchtime once a week. Seeing your commitment through to
