Rules of Dharma-yuddha

"Dharma-yuddha" in ancient Hindu scriptures finds its root in two words: dharma which means righteousness, right way of living and yuddha which refers to warfare. Dharma-yuddha was a war that had numerous rules such as those on elephants are not supposed to attack infantry. all rules were designed to make the war fair for all involved.

Metaphorically speaking, the process you are embarking on will sometimes make you feel like you are at war! Not a violent war but rather a war of love. A war that, as we said, will first start within yourself. We like the metaphor because any righteous warrior inevitably gets scared, but eventually calls on the virtue echoed by Nelson Mandela in the opening quote: courage. So to help you fight your own righteous battle, on top of the courage that you will draw on to truly look within you, we will equip you with three very simple "rules of Dharma-yuddha" to follow. Dharma-yuddha Rule #1: Seize the Power of Choice

Everything we do is a choice. When we get up in the morning, we can choose to be happy or to put on our miserable face. We could even choose to stop breathing if we wanted to! Not an easy proposition but possible.

The power to choose in all that we do has always been with us from the moment we were born. This may shake your foundation but it is as true as water will make you wet… You may say Wait a minute, as an infant I had no choice as to when to eat or go to sleep and as a kid I was forced to go to school more often than not! To that we answer this.

As crazy as it may sound, when we are infants, our will, our power to choose, is at its peak. The tragedy is that as we grow up, we let go of that amazing attribute of ours and we sadly decide to lend it to others or circumstances.

Listen, we don’t remember how we thought when we were babies. We wish we could… But many psychologists agree that innate temperaments are most readily observed in newborn babies. We all know from observing infants that they each have a mind of their own. At the earliest of age you can’t force them to eat or go to sleep unless they choose to do so. As a new parent, aunt, or uncle, we all have stories to that effect, when we tried to impose our own time table on an infant, but to no avail… don’t we? As far as school is concerned, true that you might have been forced to go when you really didn’t want to. But when it happened you still had the final choice. It was for you to decide if your mind and soul was also going to attend class that day. If you elected to daydream instead of paying attention, no one in the whole universe could change that. Not one person could strain you to do so, but you!

Now we are not minimizing the fact that certain choices are a lot tougher to make than others. Conditions in which we live, environments that have kind of defined us and brought us to where we are, may for instance, have the appearance of situations without alternatives. Truth is, such circumstances require more choice energy than most, but when it’s all said and done, the choice is still ours to make, no one else.

We said from the start that we believe great fulfilling relationships are possible and available to anyone willing to make that choice. You would not be reading this book if this was not what you wanted. To us, this is the essence of choice fundamental in the ReLovenshipTM process.

As you will notice throughout the book we love definitions. We think they are crucial to help us weigh properly the hidden value of what often look like simple words; the type of words we abundantly use without giving them second thoughts or proper attention.

Most of the times we’ll show you definitions from our own concise dictionary. We can justify doing so as none of the traditional lexicon references had yet defined the word ReLovenshipTM at the time of this writing! Self-justification can sometimes be a wonderful thing… So let’s look at our choice definition:
