    Chapter 1

    INTRODUCTION

I’ve always wanted to go see Oprah live. For years, I would fantasize about going with a friend, spending a few days in Chicago, and getting to see Ms. O in person. When she announced her retirement, I thought my fantasies would end there, but one day I received a call from a friend.

You are never going to believe who I am going to go see!

    Who?

OPRAH!!!! Can you believe it? She’s coming to Houston! Do you want to go with me?

Did I want to go with her? OF COURSE, I WANTED TO GO WITH HER!!! This opportunity was my fantasy minus the windy city!

Yes! Yes! Yes! I want to go!

Great, she’s going to be here with Joel Osteen, too.

Oh, my goodness…two of my favorite people in one room? Oh, my! This show would be even better than my fantasies!

The day arrived, and we filed into the Hobby Center for Performing Arts with 4,998 of our new best friends. Each of us dressed to the nines, the room’s energy pulsed with aliveness and anticipation.

Soon, the subject would turn to forgiveness, though that was not what each person asked about specifically. Instead, these questions sounded like…

How do I move past the pain of my divorce?

How do I let go of my anger towards my ex-husband?

    How do I …

One by one, each person asked about how to let go of an unresolved issue.

How could they let go of all that was troubling them?

The answer from Joel was to give each problem over to God. To trust God has greater things in store for you. By this point in my life, I had learned that nothing bad ever happens. Even the most tragic, horrible event has a gift wrapped within it that sets us off on a new course in life. I had experienced many of these types of events. I also had discovered most people never discover this deeper truth for themselves because all too often those gifts go unwrapped in favor of the person focusing on why the event happened in the first place.

I could feel the deep yearning within each person. Some felt almost desperate to let go of their burdens.

The hosts offered suggestions. The participants nodded indicating understanding of the wisdom shared. Underneath the energy in the room, I could feel the uneasiness within those asking for answers. Some rephrased their questions seemingly searching for greater understanding. Others smiled as if they had gained a significant insight.

If forgiving was so easy, as easy as giving our concerns over to God, then why was it so very hard to let go?

I left the show deeply concerned about this question – and those who were asking for answers.

    Chapter 2

    WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?

For some, forgiveness is about letting someone off the hook for what they have done. When a person tries to forgive from this perspective, forgiveness can be challenging to achieve.

When you feel wronged by another person, the energy inside of you is active and alive. Active energy running inside of you makes your connection with that person stronger. And, that active, alive energy wants attention. It seeks expression. This energy, left unchecked, will seek out an audience. Soon, you are on the move, and that energy attracts others who share the same energy with you! You might tell your story to a friend who will listen. Others may come into your life to share their stories – similar stories to yours. It’s as if magnets come together to work out like energies.

You may seek revenge. You might harbor fantasies of making the other person pay. You may even wish the other person harm. Perhaps you want an apology from the person who hurt you. Or maybe you
