    Revelation - Imogen Karr

Out of Body, Out of Mind

    Revelation

Joel's life had taken a decidedly strange turn. In some ways the changes had started out wonderfully. His high school girlfriend Laura had agreed to go on a date with him, and he expected it to be the most romantic evening ever. He intended the experience to be so enticing that Laura would not even dream of dating another man.

    ––––––––

Instead, it had turned violent and nearly deadly. In one evening his life became completely altered by the act of a serial killer. He had assaulted Joel and kidnapped Laura. Joel could not just sit and wait for Laura to be found. He was a reporter, and knew what this particular serial killer did to the women he abducted.

    ––––––––

After Joel was assaulted and passed out he had an out of body experience. Whether it was a result of the blow to his head or the sheer trauma of the situation is unclear. Later, when he was hypnotized in an attempt to recall as many details of the crime as he could, he discovered something strange. Joel had acquired the ability to astrally project. He could connect with Laura and see where she was.

    ––––––––

Eventually he was able to find her, solely by the clues he discovered while he was astral traveling. Naturally the surly and seasoned detective Williams would not believe any of this, but he did accompany Joel on Laura's rescue. They found her in time, but not the criminal who had abducted her.

    ––––––––

As Joel sat in a chair beside her hospital bed he was still trying to wrap his mind around everything that had happened, and most importantly, how he could keep Laura safe.

    ––––––––

How is she? Detective Williams’ thick voice enquired from the door of the hospital room. Joel did not take his eyes off of Laura who was sound asleep. She had been medicated more for the trauma that she had experienced than for the pain she was in. Even sedated she would moan and yell out in her sleep.

    ––––––––

When she awoke Joel witnessed the terror flash across her face until she realized where she was, in a hospital room, far away from that horrible basement where she had been held. Joel wanted to take that fear from her. He felt responsible for the fact that she had been abducted after all it had been his idea to revisit the small shack they used to sneak off to when they were in high school. Somehow the killer must have known they would be there. Somehow he must have expected them to arrive. Joel was lost in this thought when detective Williams’ voice startled him.

    ––––––––

Uh, she's alright, he said as he cleared his throat, physically anyway. Detective Williams nodded but his eyes lingered on Joel. When he spoke again his voice was stern. We need to talk Joel.

    ––––––––

Joel stared down at his hands which were splayed open in his lap. He did not want to talk to detective Williams. He knew that the impending conversation would not be a pleasant one.

    ––––––––

Am I under investigation? Joel asked carefully without looking up. Should you be? Detective Williams countered, his eyes narrowing sharply. I found her, Joel's voice was strong as he swept his gaze up toward Detective Williams. That's all that matters.
