But the police need his help, which will lead to Joel being more entangled than he could ever have imagined, putting his girlfriend Laura in more danger.

    Resolution - Imogen Karr

Out of Body Out of Mind

    Resolution

The police station was in chaos as Joel sat staring into space. Someone had come along to clean his hands, after photographing them of course. It had been strange to have an absolute stranger washing his hands for him. When someone mentioned he may want to go to the hospital, he could only shake his head numbly. No hospitals. No anything. He just wanted to disappear. He did not want to admit that somehow he had been best friends with a man, a man that was more of an animal than he was human.

    ––––––––

Joel could still feel him pumping through his veins, like the most terrifying kind of ghost.

Mike, he cringed and lowered his head, tears biting at the back of his eyes. If only he had been able to save her, if only he had been able to get there a minute sooner. Had it been because he hesitated? Not wanting to leave Laura alone had delayed his journey, had delayed his discovery, and now a young woman's parents were getting the most heartbreaking news.

    ––––––––

But Joel had been there. Joel had felt the last of her warm blood passing through his fingers as he begged for the paramedics to get there faster. In shock, all of the sounds around him seemed to be at a distance. It was not that much different than what he experienced when he was astral projecting. Distant, pulsating emanations, that didn't really have an impact on him. But there was someone else there, who did.

    ––––––––

Wake up, snap out of it, Detective Williams demanded as he gave Joel's shoulders a sharp shake. Come on, now's not the time to break Joel, you have to be strong.

    ––––––––

Joel stared up at the older man. His weathered features and furrowed brows made him look as if he had lain in the sun for far too many years. But it was not the sun that had burned a look of defeat into this man. It was years of chasing criminals like Mike. It was the fact that no matter how much he wanted it all to be over, there was always another horrible person to hunt down.

    ––––––––

She's dead, Joel said flatly, his heart racing, his stomach tight and ready to repel whatever he had eaten earlier in the day. He could not recall eating anything, he could not recall breathing or even being who he was, before that moment when Mike had looked him in the eyes, and told him, that he knew that Joel could feel it inside of him too. And he still could. It was the most terrifying sensation to be repulsed by his own mind.

    ––––––––

Yes, she is, Rick nodded as he sat down beside Joel. But you're not kid, and you need to realize that fast. Because you are it, you are the one who is going to stop this madman.

    ––––––––

I was right there, Joel stammered. I was right there, he lifted a shaking hand and reached out, as if he could still see Mike standing in front
