About this ebook

As the rebellion reels from the defeats at Larahope and Zavis, Crineal and Cyndora take some well-deserved leave. Heading to their new home of Glenxanie, they plan to spend a relaxing few months around Crineal’s mansion before resuming the fight against the rebels. The attack on the base at Halcanaty promises to be no push over, though, and Crineal knows that even a successful operation won’t necessarily give them all the answers he and Sar’Clax need. Information about the shadowy group behind the rebels is essential. Without that, even the destruction of the rebel military doesn’t guarantee the end of the war. The cabal backing the rebellion have their own plans, though, and they intend to make sure that the couple never leave Glenxanie alive, let alone end the war.

    About the Author

    Chapter One

Crineal made his way back to his cabin, absently returning the salutes of those crew members he passed as he strolled past the flight bays and into the pilots’ quarters. His route from Admiral Ken’Rathel’s office was somewhat circuitous to give him time to think. For the last fourteen years, his life had been dedicated to destroying the rebellion that had killed his friends and parents. Now he was perhaps just a few months away from achieving that goal and it left him wondering what he would do afterwards. Wandering into the gym Crineal made a cursory inspection of the equipment whilst contemplating his future. There was nothing to say he had to leave the Space Corps, but then, without the rebellion to fight, was there a reason to stay? He would certainly miss his friends and comrades and that perhaps was the biggest reason to remain in the service. He enjoyed the flying, too, but it wasn’t only himself he had to think about. Life onboard a warship wouldn’t be much of a life for Cyndora, he thought. She’d put up with it for his sake, Crineal had no doubt, but he wanted better for her. Maybe once the fighting was over I should resign and retire to my estates on Glenxanie, he mused. They could make a fresh start there and find new friends, plus the house would be big enough to accommodate any of his old comrades that wanted to visit. Heck, it could probably hold all of his friends at the same time. Though the upcoming attack on Halcanaty wouldn’t be the end of everything, even if it went according to plan. There would still be cleanup work to do, dismantling rebel supply caches, hunting down escaped elements of the rebel fleet and the rest of tasks that went with the aftermath of war and the start of peace. Perhaps he should stay on for a year or eighteen months just to see those things through? Crineal shook his head. It wasn’t wholly his decision to make. He needed to sit down and talk things over with his bride-to-be. It was their life he was considering, not just his. With that decided he straightened up a little and changed his direction to head back to the quarters he shared with Cyndora.

When Crineal arrived he found his redheaded fiancée sitting on the couch, with her legs tucked under her, studying her data-pad. Cyndora was dressed in her favorite shipboard outfit of pale-blue, silk long shorts and matching short-sleeved blouse. She gave him a bright smile as he entered.

Hey, Sweetie, how did your meeting with the admiral go? Cyndora inquired, as she put down her data-pad and got up to give him a welcoming kiss.

Crineal took her into his arms and returned her show of affection. It went ok, I guess, sort of.

Cyndora caught the note of uncertainty in his voice and pushed back a little to look at him. What happened?

He ordered me to take some leave or else, Crineal sighed.

So what’s wrong with that? Cyndora asked with some confusion. A few days on Denarzel relaxing would be great. She took in his expression at her words. Not a few days huh? How long did he tell you?

Three months, he stated succinctly. He said he doesn’t want to see me back here until the repairs and refit are complete and the Annihilator is ready for service again. He threatened to suspend me on medical grounds if I argued and said he’d get Dr. Marrash to countersign the order to relieve me, Crineal finished gloomily.

Oh. That sounds like a lot of relaxing on Denarzel. Cyndora studied his face once more. Or did you have something else in mind? she asked, arms still around his neck.

Well, I did think that we might go to Glenxanie. It’s only five days’ travel and it would give me a chance to look around and get a feel for the place. Crineal gave her a smile. If it’s going to be our home then I really should see what it’s like.

Cyndora returned the smile. Sounds like a good idea to me. Then she frowned. You’ll need to do something about the security on the estate though. I sent you those notes I made. I think even I could break into the place.

Crineal nodded. I hadn’t forgotten. I was going to make some calls and check out travel arrangements before we arrive at Denarzel, see what I can sort out.

Alright, Crin. Why don’t you get started on that? And I’ll get you a cup of tea. Cyndora gave him another quick kiss and turned away to head to the kitchen.

Crineal watched her go, appreciatively studying her shapely legs and bottom, before settling himself on the couch and opening up a hyper link to Escarlian. He punched in his private code for Lord Sar’Clax’s estate and waited. A few minutes later the image of his friend and mentor appeared.

Crin, my boy, New Year’s greetings to you both. How are you doing? The grey-haired man smiled broadly at him. Cyndora returned with her kafe and Crineal’s tea, placing his cup on the coffee table in front of the couch. And Cyndy, you’re looking lovely as always, my dear.

Cyndora smiled in acknowledgement as she sat down and Crineal replied. New Year’s greetings to you and Magda as well. We’re doing well, My Lord. I’m calling to ask a favor. Admiral Ken’Rathel has ordered me on leave for three months without an option.

Sar’Clax grinned at him. Good for the admiral. Will you be visiting us then? Magda will be thrilled.

Crineal shook his head regretfully. Much as the idea appeals to us, I thought it would be a good idea to visit Glenxanie and get to know the place. Show my face and meet some of the people, you know.

Sar’Clax looked a little disappointed, but nodded in agreement. It sounds sensible to me. So what’s this favor?

Well, Cyndy noticed that the estate security was pretty woeful and I’m going to need to upgrade it, especially if your fears about our safety are correct. I don’t imagine the attack on Zavis will have lowered our profile with the opposition. Sar’Clax gave out an amused grunt at that. I was going to see if the security firm that looked after Cyndy would start on the upgrades, but I wondered who it is that you employ to do your security systems. Crineal took a small sip of his tea.

I have a consultant to look after the place. Security Specialist Inzadatta, Sar’Clax said. He came up with the overall scheme and then subcontracted out the actual work to other firms. He does a yearly check on the systems and recommends upgrades; if anything new hits the markets that he feels is vital then he contacts me to see if I want it installed.

Sounds like what I’ll need, Crineal replied after a moment’s consideration. Does he do off -world work?

I have no idea, but I can ask him and if the answer is no, I’m sure I could convince him to make an exception in your case, Sar’Clax assured Crineal.

That would be appreciated, Sir, he responded thankfully. I expect to arrive on Glenxanie in about a week. So if your man could be there then or soon after, that would be ideal.

No problem, I’ll get right on to him. There was a pause as Sar’Clax changed subjects. I’ve been looking over the reports of the Zavis operation. Very tidy piece of work. Shame about the base being destroyed, but that couldn’t be helped. The construction of the fire ships for Halcanaty is well under way and they should be ready in plenty of time.

That’s good to hear. The Annihilator should be out of dock and ready by then. Crineal took another drink from his cup. The admiral and Captain Aldar put in a request for a refit to be brought forward and carried out at the same time as the repairs.

Sar’Clax nodded. Yes, that came across my desk this morning. I’ve approved it, so you’ll have a lovely up-to-date ship to come back to.

And the Snaricals, Sir? Crineal inquired. They were a life saver at Zangareb and Zavis.

We’re rolling them out across the fleet, Sar’Clax informed him. I’ve made sure that the carriers that will accompany you to Halcanaty have the highest priority, so the Annihilator won’t have the burden of leading the attack by itself.

Crineal sighed gratefully. Thank you, Sir. My squadrons seem to have been taking the brunt of things this last year. I don’t want to lose any more people than necessary now that we’re so close to ending this.

I understand. I hope you’ll let someone else have the honor of being the vanguard when you plan the next attack. Sar’Clax gave Crineal a stern look.

Yes, Sir. Well, I don’t want to keep you any longer, My Lord, so give Magda our best and tell her that we’ll talk to her soon. Cyndora gave Sar’Clax a bright smile and a little wave.

You two take care. I’ll get Inzadatta to contact you about arrangements. And with that Sar’Clax reached out to cut the connection.

Well, one call down, Crineal said as he stole a quick kiss from Cyndora. Now for some calls to Glenxanie. Crineal opened up another hyper relay link, this time to the planet that was his charge. He requested the offices of Henglast Security and sat back as the connection was made and the image of a man in a smart suit appeared in front of him.

Henglast Security. My name is Addarnat. How may I help you? the man asked with a pleasant smile.

I’m Baron Cri’Neal. I’d like to talk to someone about a possible contract, please.

Of course, Baron. If you’ll just bear with me a minute I’ll find someone to attend to your needs. The man’s image was replaced with the logo of the security firm.

Within a couple of minutes the logo disappeared to be replaced by a woman with short brown hair, dark green eyes and a severe looking face. Baron Cri’Neal. It’s good to see you again.

Director Tallidar. Crineal nodded in greeting to the woman he had spoken to when arranging Cyndora’s security escort during her recent stay on Glenxanie. I trust you are doing well?

Tallidar gave him a small smile accompanied by a shrug. It’s winter here on Glenxanie so it’s the usual mixture of cold and damp. No one wants to be working outdoor security details in this weather. But business is fair so I’ve no complaints considering the current state of the economy. Glenxanie was going through a rough period at the moment according to the reports Crineal had seen, although the last couple of months had shown a slight upturn. I understand that you wish to discuss a contract?

Crineal had liked the way the woman had been all business in his dealings with her before and he was pleased to see that it appeared to be part of her personality rather than an act. Is this line secure at your end? he asked. Crineal wanted to make sure details of his planned visit didn’t get out before he arrived.

After pressing a couple of buttons on her desk, Tallidar gave him a terse nod. It is now, Baron. She hadn’t seemed to take any offence at the question which Crineal felt indicated a good attitude towards her line of work.

Good. I have two jobs to discuss. The first concerns the security situation at my estate. Cyndora here, and he gave a nod at his partner, reported to me that the measures on the estate were woefully understrength. Did your teams give you a report from their time tending to her? Crineal took another sip of his tea as Tallidar brought up the files on her data screen.

She spent a few minutes reading through the summary before replying. Yes, Baron. My field people said the same thing: inadequate perimeter defense and detection, poorly trained staff, and out-of-date equipment used in house surveillance. Tallidar looked back up at him from the screen she had been studying. Does that match what Miss Cyndora reported?

Cyndy wasn’t as detailed as that, it’s not her field of expertise you understand. But yes, she wasn’t impressed by the set-up. So firstly, would you be able to begin an upgrade of the security of the estate?

We can do that, Baron. From the report summaries I’ve just seen, the work will take some time to complete though and I say that without having a full survey of the problem. Crineal nodded acceptance of her proviso. When would you like us to start?

Immediately. I want you to undertake a full survey and begin upgrading the basics right away, Crineal instructed Tallidar with a serious air.

Tallidar blinked and gathered her thoughts for a second. But we haven’t agreed on a contract or price for the work yet, Sir.

Crineal waved a hand dismissively. Send the contract to my estate manager. I’ll tell her to approve it. As for price, it costs what it costs. Just put in the best systems you can and itemize them on the final bill. It’ll be paid.

Tallidar eased back in her chair, hands clasped thoughtfully in front of her. Well, that makes a change from the normal negotiations I have to do.

She received a shrug from Crineal in return. I’m putting our safety in your hands. I’d be stupid to quibble over the cost when I can afford it. Tallidar nodded at that. I’ll be trying to arrange a specialist to come and look over the place, though. Will you have a problem working with an outside consultant if I can get it set up? Crineal asked.

Tallidar shook her head. No, Sir. You’re paying, we do as you say.

Good. Now the second part is that we’ll be arriving on Glenxanie soon and we’ll need a security escort at all times during our stay. Crineal caught a flicker of surprise cross the woman’s face. Do you have the staff to do that?

How long are we talking about? Tallidar gnawed at her lower lip as she tried to think of all of the current contracts her firm was committed to.

This comes under the heading of confidential information, Director. Crineal waited for Tallidar’s nod before continuing. We plan to arrive in a little over a week and stay for about three months. I don’t have exact dates yet as I’ve not arranged the transport.

Tallidar’s eyes glazed over as she considered the logistics of this. Finally she shook herself and replied. I think we can manage that, Baron. We might have to subcontract out some of our current workload, but I believe it’s doable. She studied Crineal for a few moments. Do you have reason to think that your life is threatened, Baron?

Crineal gave out a bark of laughter. Director, I don’t mean to sound immodest, but I imagine that the rebellion has a fairly large price on my head given the events of the last year alone. I would guess that they are lining up to take pot shots at me right now. His expression turned serious again. But if you mean has there been a specific threat, then no. However I don’t think that leaders of the rebellion are likely to send me a warning in the mail, do you?

No, Sir, I take your point. Tallidar hesitated for a second. I will need to talk this over with the other two directors, with your permission of course. A task like this is going to tie up most of our resources for the period of your stay and I’ll need to get their approval.

I understand that, Director, and as long as the information is kept between the three of you then I have no objections, Crineal agreed.

Very well, Baron. And the contract and pricing…? Tallidar asked.

Same as with the security systems, Crineal told her. You bill me and I’ll pay. As soon as I have my travel itinerary worked out I’ll let you know of our arrival date. Do you have any questions?

Tallidar blew out a breath. Not right now, Sir. I’m sure I will have, but I’ll message you with them. We appreciate you thinking of us for your security needs, Baron.

You’re welcome, Director Tallidar. I hope you feel that way in three months’ time, Crineal said with a wry look. I’m just about to call Estate Manager Shionia and tell her of the arrangements. She’s the one you’ll need to liaise with. I look forward to seeing your people when we arrive at Glenxanie. He gave Tallidar an affable nod as he closed the link.

Crineal took another drink before opening the next link. Almost instantly the image of an older woman appeared. Her face had a few lines and her long grey hair was tied up in a ponytail behind her. Shionia’s dark brown eyes gazed at them and her lips twitched as if repressing a joke only she knew. Cyndora recognized the room she was sitting in as Zereglim’s old office.

Ahh, Baron Cri’Neal. New Year’s greetings to ye, Shionia said in the same brogue that Cyndora remembered from Branklee, an accent that reminded her of Scottish. And what can I be helping ye with today?

New Year’s greetings to you, too, Madam Shionia. I hope you had a pleasant celebration? Crineal offered with a polite smile.

Aye, nae too bad, thanks. My husband woke up with a mite of a hangover though. Serves him right if he doesnae know his limit by now, Shionia replied with an amused tone.

Crineal chuckled. Indeed. How are the estate figures looking? he inquired as he placed his cup on the table.

Shionia let out a heavy sigh. They’re a mess. It’s going to take me months to clear up Zereglim’s handiwork. A look of distaste crossed her features. I thought he was a bit of a laddie, but I didnae think he was this rotten. Anyways, I’ve cancelled all the contracts with those folks that were implicated in his schemes and put them out for new tenders. I’m already starting to see some improvement in the estates figures and the ten million credits that Grallman has recovered are helping nicely. I’ve sent your young lassie the figures. She nodded towards Cyndora.

I’ve got them, thanks, Madam Shionia, Cyndora confirmed. They’re looking good so far.

I’m sorry to have dumped all this on you, Madam Shionia, Crineal said with an apologetic look. I do appreciate your stepping in to help.

Ach, think nothing of it. I was getting bored sitting around the house and my husband needed a break from my nagging. The credits you’re paying me will treat us to a nice vacation too, so I’ve nae complaints, Shionia assured him.

Good. Have you done anything about the security staff at the house yet? Crineal asked as he eased back onto the couch a little.

Shionia grimaced. Security staff? That’s nae what I’d call them. I’m always surprised to turn up each morning and find that none of them have managed to accidently shoot themselves. But nae, they are well down on my list of problems at the moment. Why? She looked sharply at Crineal.

I’ve retained Henglast Security to do a complete upgrade on the systems, Crineal informed her. They’ll be working with a consultant that will be coming in from Escarlian, name of Inzadatta. I told them to send you a contract with the broad outline and for them not to worry over the costs. We’ll pay whatever it takes for the security to be put right.

A scowl appeared on Shionia’s face. Eh. They’ll be charging us the stars then. She paused for a moment before sighing once more. But there’s nae doubt it needs doing.

Yes it does. I told Director Tallidar to contact you to make arrangements so as to start work. Crineal smiled as the old woman nodded in resigned acceptance. And just to further brighten your day, Cyndy and I will be arriving in just over a week’s time. Shionia’s eyes opened wide at this news. I have a few months’ leave that I’ve been ordered to take so I thought it would be a good idea to visit Glenxanie and get to know the place.

I’ll get the staff to start preparing the house immediately, Baron, Shionia assured him. I’ll likely need to get in a few temporary folks in for your visit, too.

Crineal shook his head. I don’t want you to tell anyone about our visit until the day of our arrival. Lord Sar’Clax and I are very worried about security right now and the fewer people who know our plans then the safer we’ll be. He smiled at her. We won’t take it amiss if there’s a bit of dust around when we get there. Better that than a gauntlet of snipers.

Is it that bad, Baron? Shionia asked worriedly, her brown eyes full of concern.

We hope not, but Lord Sar’Clax isn’t taking any chances and I think it would be prudent to follow his example. Shionia nodded in agreement. Henglast will be arranging security for our visit so there’s no need to worry about that and if you have to hire anyone extra then I’d like you to pass on the candidates’ names to Director Tallidar for a background check if you wouldn’t mind, Crineal requested.

Aye, I can do that. Any more little surprises for me, Baron? Shionia inquired with a teasing little smile.

No, I don’t think so, Crineal replied with a chuckle. I think I’ve bothered you enough for one day. I’ll leave you in peace and message you with our arrival date when I have it. Thank you again for all your hard work, and I’ll see you in a week or so.

You’re welcome, Baron. I look forward to meeting you and Miss Cyndora in person, Shionia said.

Crineal gave her one last nod and cut the hyper relay link. He put his arm around Cyndora’s shoulders. I was thinking about seeing if there are any military transports I could book us on if that’s ok with you, Love?

Cyndora snuggled up to him a little. Military transport? she asked with a puzzled look.

Yes, Most Space Corps freighters have passenger quarters for moving personnel from duty post to duty post. It’s the usual way for us to get around. He gave out another chuckle. You’ve been horribly pampered with travel on liners. But apart from moving people around on assignment, any spare cabins can be requested by crew going on and returning from leave. It’s a perk of the job and doesn’t cost anything, so most use it as a cheap travel option. The quarters are pretty basic of course but hey, it’s free so no one complains. Cyndora nodded at the logic. For us it has the advantage that as long as there is space and I place a booking before the final boarding time then we can leave it to the last minute. I don’t have to worry about booking and paying ahead of time as I would on a commercial flight and our names won’t appear on any easily available passenger lists. What do you think? Would you mind travelling freight for this trip?

Cyndora shook her head. Of course not. It makes sense to me if we’re trying to be unnoticed. I can rough it for a bit in the interest of staying alive, she told him with an impish little smile.

Good. Then I’ll see what ships are heading to Glenxanie. They should be fairly frequent with Denarzel being the main repair base in the area and Glenxanie being the sector HQ. I’ll find the earliest departing ship I can and monitor the cabin space so that I can book if it starts filling up. He sighed. Now all I’ve got to do is put everything in order here before we go.

Cyndora tapped his nose with a finger. And pack. Don’t forget that. There’s always the packing.

Cyndora entered the Standards’ rec dorm in search of her friends. She’d walked with Crineal to his office that morning where he was going to start on all of the paperwork for transferring his duties to Colonel Strieger and Major Saymes. Saymes had received notification of his promotion from captain on New Year’s Eve and it had given him extra cause to celebrate. Cyndora spotted her friends gathered around Marshalla’s bed and she wandered over to join them. Xianing was the first to see Cyndora and waved at her, a bright smile on her rosebud lips. Jaydea turned her head to see who Xianing was waving at and bounced up off the bed to give Cyndora a hug.

Hey, Xian, Marsh, Cyndora greeted the other two as she returned Jaydea’s embrace. Once her friend had let her go, Cyndora gave Marshalla and Xianing each a little kiss on the cheek before sitting down with them on the bed. She studied their faces for a moment. You three look excited. What’s going on?

This morning Lieutenant Morinara announced we’ll be getting leave when we dock at Denarzel, Jaydea told her gleefully.

Oh, that’s terrific. You’ll love looking around an orbital, Jay. Cyndora gave her friend another hug.

Actually, I’ve never been on an orbital either, said Xianing. Not on a commercial one at least. So it’ll be a new experience for me, too.

Cyndora looked a little surprised. Really? I thought Galactics travelled a lot.

Marshalla shook her head. We try to, but it ain’t cheap and we really only start once we get reasonable jobs. Most families can’t afford the costs when ya have to include kids as well.

I was still studying when I was arrested so I hadn’t had a chance yet, Xianing said a little sadly.

And I was busy wasting my life, so I never went on one either until the general took us on that test trip, Marshalla added.

Well, you’re all getting to go now so that’s good, Cyndora said brightly, trying to distract them a little from their darker memories. Do you know when you’ll go yet?

Yeah. They posted up the leave rosters already. Xian gets to go three days after we arrive and I go after a week, Jaydea informed her happily. Marsh has to wait ten days.

The dusky-skinned woman shrugged her shoulders. No biggie. I already went once so I can wait a bit.

The lieutenant said if everything went well then we’d probably get a second day’s leave after the first rotation was done, Xianing put in. And maybe a third as well. It’s going to be great. Everyone’s looking forward to it.

Cyndora glanced around the dorm and realized that assistants were in gathered in groups, looking happier than she remembered seeing them before. That’s great. Everyone does look cheerful. Did they say anything about spending money? Her three friends shook their heads. Hmm. Cyndora frowned a little and activated her comm link. Lieutenant Morinara.

A few seconds later a woman’s voice replied, Lieutenant Morinara here.

Ah, Lieutenant, this is Aide Cyndora. I understand you’ve been involved in arranging leave for the recreation assistants?

Yes, Ma’am, that’s correct, Morinara replied. Is there a problem?

No, not at all, Cyndora assured her. I was just wondering if the assistants were to be given any spending money for their leave.

Yes, Ma’am, we’ve been authorized to provide a ten credit chip for each assistant on the first day of leave at a station, Morinara said helpfully. So they’ll get a credit chip on the first round of leave, but not on any further ones until we arrive at a new station.

Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate your assistance. Cyndora out. She tapped the comm link off and smiled at her friends. You’ll get a ten credit chip each for your first visit and then you’ll have to wait until we reach the next stopover before you get another one.

Marshalla and Jaydea gave out whoops whilst Xianing just smiled. Cyndora thought for a moment and then dug into her purse. In a side pocket she found two ten credit chips left over from her trip to Glenxanie. She frowned at them. Poop. I was hoping I had something to split amongst you. But I only have the two chips.

Marshalla waved her hand at Xianing and Jaydea. Give them to these two, Cyndy. I got ten credits from the general on my trip so I’m good.

Cyndora hesitated. Are you sure, Marsh? Her friend nodded and Cyndora handed a chip each to Jaydea and Xianing.

Xianing smiled gratefully. Thanks, Cyndy, and don’t worry, I’ll make sure Marsh gets a few credits from it too.

Me too, added Jaydea and Marshalla hugged them both.

Well, I’ve got some news, too. Cyndora looked around to make sure no one could overhear. Keep this to yourselves, but Crin and I will be going on leave for a few months, she informed them in a low voice. We’re trying to keep it quiet until we arrive at Glenxanie. Once we’re seen there I don’t think it will matter as everyone will know, but I didn’t want you to worry.

No problem, Cyndy. We won’t blab, said Jaydea as Marshalla and Xianing nodded their agreement.

Thanks. Crin is worried about what the rebels might try after the attack on Zavis. Cyndora’s friends looked at each other in concern.

Are you going to be alright, Cyndy? asked Xianing worriedly. We don’t want anything to happen to either of you.

We’ll be fine, Xian. We’re just trying to take some sensible precautions is all, Cyndora assured her. It’s not like there will be a team of hit-men waiting around every corner, but there’s no point in making it easy for anyone. Marshalla and Xianing nodded at the wisdom of that, however Jaydea still looked unhappy at the thought that anyone might want to harm her friend. Cyndora patted Jaydea’s arm. There’s nothing to worry about, Jay, even Lord Sar’Clax goes around with a security team for protection.

If you say so, Cyndy, Jaydea said in an unconvinced tone as she hugged Cyndora once more.

Cyndora arrived back at their rooms and made herself a drink before settling down on the couch to study the latest reports from Madam Shionia. The estate reports were looking much better and she noted that a lot of the new contract tenders had been settled at much lower costs than previously. Overall, it looked as if the accounts were going to be far better this year, even more than the three million a year that Zereglim had been stealing could account for. Cyndora looked through the figures for a while and then switched to the economic news feeds from Glenxanie. Although there had been a small downturn with the news of the embezzlement from the estate, the general economy had bounced back and was showing a trend upwards again. Initial indications were that the planetary economy was growing at a greater percentage than it had before Zereglim’s arrest. The various local pundits were attributing this to a renewed confidence in Glenxanie’s fortunes and prospects under a baron that actually cared for the planet. There were a few interviews with the heads of charities announcing the increased donations from the estate and it was felt that this was adding to the overall upturn as financiers reasoned that perhaps Glenxanie might be worth additional investment as the social conditions improved on the planet. Cyndora felt a glow of pleasure that her work had been a contributing factor to all of this and that the citizens of her new home were already starting to feel the benefits. As Cyndora scanned the reports she noticed that they seemed to split into two sections. The local news on Glenxanie was tending to lay the credit at the feet of Crineal due to his choice of top level staff and his obvious concern for the world he had been appointed to care for. These reports praised him for his careful selection of people and his efforts to improve the life of the average citizen of Glenxanie. The other section of news stories were from the bigger galactic-wide media outlets and they barely mentioned Crineal at all. Instead they attributed the improvement of the planet’s fortunes to a spill-over from some of the economies of nearby worlds that were also doing a little better. Cyndora had a quick look at the figures of a few of the mentioned worlds and, although their economies were heading upwards, they were nowhere near the rates that Glenxanie was seeing. She was no economist, but it suggested to her that they were benefitting from Glenxanie and not the other way around. Cyndora gave a small shrug; the main point was that Glenxanie was doing better. She took a break for lunch after receiving a message from Crineal that he’d be having just a quick snack in his office, and after eating she went back to going through the accounts. Crineal finally returned long after she had finished for the day and Cyndora fixed dinner for them both as he wearily changed out of his uniform. He looked exhausted and she knew tomorrow was going to be no better for him as he rushed to complete all the paperwork he could before going on leave. Despite her teasing of the day before, she had allocated all of her time the following day to packing for the trip, determined to leave him as little of the domestic chores to do as she possibly could.

Director Tallidar arrived at Crineal’s estate about mid-morning in the midst of another of the rain storms that were typical of Glenxanie’s winters. She had taken an innocuous flyer from the security firm’s transport pool rather than her own car. Tallidar had decided that low key was the way to go and her preference for sporty air cars was well known. Her impression of the house as she approached it was that it was going to be a bitch to make secure quickly. The grounds were extensive and the ‘L’ shape of the house itself wasn’t going to help. She set the flyer down in the parking area in front of the house and made her way to the main door. As she palmed the comm plate to announce herself, Tallidar was mentally wincing at the need to do so. There had been no warning messages as she had flown across the perimeter of the estate and no one was ready to greet her as she landed. A good security system would have tracked her approach and guards should have alerted the house staff to her imminent arrival. The director had left the time of her intended visit deliberately vague to test these things out and so far the house guards had failed miserably. Finally the front door was opened by a man in the blue and green livery that represented Glenxanie, his thinning auburn hair made him look older than he was. According to her notes the man’s name was Barratol and he was the housekeeper.

Director Tallidar? he inquired politely. At her nod he stepped back and gestured for her to enter. This way, please. Madam Shionia is expecting you. At least someone was, thought Tallidar sourly, as the man led her into the house.

The housekeeper escorted her into an office and shut the door behind him as he left. The old woman that Tallidar had spoken to the previous day stood up and came around her desk to greet Tallidar.

Good morning to ye, Director, Shionia greeted her, holding out a hand. I hope ye weren’t too inconvenienced by the weather?

Tallidar shook the proffered hand. Thank you and no, I’ve lived on Glenxanie for nearly ten years now and I’ve managed to become accustomed to the vagaries of the climate.

Shionia chuckled and gestured to the chair in front of the desk whilst she resumed her seat behind it. Once Tallidar had made herself comfortable Shionia offered to send for some refreshments. At the director’s polite refusal Shionia decided to get straight to business. I looked over the contracts you sent yesterday and I’ve forwarded them to the baron for his approval. I noted that the costs seemed a bit vague.

Tallidar gave a little shrug. Yes, I didn’t like doing that, but without a complete survey of the estate I have no idea of even a ball park figure at the moment. I would have preferred to have sent a team in to do an inspection and then submitted an estimate based on that. Tallidar sighed. The baron was most insistent that the work get started right away though.

Shionia grimaced in agreement. Aye, that’s what he told me, too. Well, he’s paying the piper so we do as he asks. So, what did ye want to see today?

I’d like a look around the house, particularly the security center and main living suite if that’s acceptable? Tallidar requested.

Nae problem, I’ll show you around myself, said Shionia, rising to her feet once more. Tallidar stood up and followed the estate manager from the room.

By the end of the day, Tallidar was thoroughly depressed at the state of the current security. The upgrade work was looking more like a complete rebuild from the ground up. At least she had some ideas on how to start and perhaps have a secure area in the mansion ready for when the baron arrived, but it was going to be months before the entire estate was anything like defensible. As she seated herself in her flyer and lifted off, Tallidar was at least cheered by the thought of the business it was going to provide for her firm.

The following evening found Crineal ready just to fall into bed when his day finished. Cyndora insisted on him eating something though and she served him a thick, hearty stew with plenty of warm bread before bundling him into bed. By the time he awoke the next morning Cyndora had already completed the last of the packing and had laid out his uniform ready for him to wear. The Annihilator had jumped into the Denarzel system whilst they were sleeping and was en-route to Orbital Three. After washing and dressing, the two of them sat down to breakfast whilst Crineal checked for messages and also made sure that the transport they planned on taking still had spare rooms. They had managed to luck out on that. The freighter Aztenka was due to depart for Glenxanie three hours after the Annihilator docked. It would give Crineal and Cyndora two hours to get to the orbital and register before the last boarding call. About twenty minutes after they had finished eating, whilst sipping their second drink of the morning, the door comm panel chimed.

Colonel Strieger and Major Saymes, Strieger’s familiar musical voice announced.

Crineal opened the door and the two officers stepped in and saluted him. Morning, Colonel, Major, Crineal greeted them as he returned their salutes.

Morning, Sir, they chorused back. All ready for your trip, Sir? Strieger inquired with a smile and a nod of greeting to Cyndora.

Crineal indicated the easy chairs in an invitation for them to seat themselves. I think so, he said with a grimace. Although the hours I’ve had to put in to prepare for it don’t make it seem like much of a break. Cyndora came back from the kitchen area with cups of kafe for Strieger and Saymes, who both accepted them gratefully. I’ve transmitted the transfer of command orders to your data-pads. They take effect at ten hundred hours. The admiral has arranged for a shuttle to be waiting to lift off for Orbital Three at that time. The two officers nodded at this. Does anyone know about my leave yet?

Strieger shook her head. Not from me and I’ve not heard anyone say anything. She looked at Saymes.

Not from me either, Sir. And no one in the squadron has said anything, not even Mus or Stal, Saymes assured them.

Crineal grunted. Well that’s good. If anyone had heard then it would be that pair. Muscovy and Staller were Hera Squadron’s two worst reprobates, with an ear everywhere and a finger in most shady deals. Only their brilliant flying and their ability to not leave very much evidence had kept them from the brig or being transferred. You both have everything ready for when I’m gone?

Strieger gave him a disparaging look. I think we’ve managed to get it all sorted out, Sir. Crineal held up his hand in apology for his question. Both officers were highly capable. I’ll have Major Quenna take over as the Flight Group XO and Major Saymes is going to have Captain Treynar act as Hera XO.

Trey has applied for some leave though and I was going to get Captain Saphya to cover that and get her to do a stint as XO, Saymes suggested tentatively. Trey will only be gone for a couple of weeks so it won’t be putting too much pressure on Saphy.

Sounds good to me, Crineal nodded approvingly. Let’s push her along as fast as we can. I still think she’s going to make a good squadron leader before long. He paused to take a sip of tea. I know you’re not going to be able to keep the news of my leave under wraps for long, but do the best you can. Once it’s out, though, if anyone wants to come and visit me on Glenxanie they’d be welcome to do so. My estate manager tells me it’s currently wet and miserable there at the moment, so no one should expect to do much sun bathing. Strieger and Saymes chuckled. However, Cyndy says the house is really nice and it’s certainly cheaper than a hotel.

Strieger smiled. Is there room service?

So I’m told. And there is plenty of accommodation for everyone. Well, unless you decide to give leave to more than two squadrons at a time, Crineal replied with a grin.

I’ll have to take you up on that sometime, Sir, Strieger said. I’ve never stayed in a mansion before.

Hmm. I can see it now, Crineal mused. The Cri’Neal Rest Home for Worn Out Pilots. All four of them laughed at the mental image that produced.

All I can say is you’d better lock up the silver when Mus and Stal visit. Strieger checked her watch. Well, Sir, we’re due to dock in less than an hour so the major and I had better go start keeping the pilots busy and out of your way. Both her and Saymes put their cups down as they stood and saluted. Have a good leave, Sir. You too, Cyndy.

Cyndora smiled at Strieger. You take care as well, Stri.

Crineal returned their salutes and the two pilots left his quarters.

    Chapter Two

By the time the ship’s comm system announced their docking at Denarzel Orbital Three, Crineal and Cyndora were ready to go. Docking was a term that covered a wide range of circumstances. It could mean an actual hard lock to a station or merely arriving at a designated parking spot around an orbital. Today it meant that the Annihilator was once again in the main Space Corps repair facility around Orbital Three. Crineal gave their cabin a last look over before leaving and he and Cyndora headed to Shuttle Bay One with their cases in tow behind them. Just as the admiral had promised there was a shuttle waiting to leave for the orbital when they arrived. Crineal and Cyndora weren’t the only passengers, but there weren’t many others. After stowing their luggage, the two of them settled into their seats and Crineal took out his data-pad to check the status of available cabins on the Aztenka. He nodded in satisfaction; there was still plenty of space and no one had been allocated the senior officer’s cabin yet. At this point it was highly unlikely anyone would be requesting passage, so Crineal felt secure in not making his own booking until they were almost at the docking port. Ten minutes later, the shuttle left the Annihilator and made its way smoothly to the orbital.

Crineal and Cyndora collected their gear and stepped off the shuttle and onto Orbital Three. As soon as they left the docking area, Cyndora halted in surprise. The orbital looked nothing like the others she had been on. It was stark and utilitarian, no flashy adverts, no fancy shop displays, just plain frontages and basic signs.

Crineal realized that she wasn’t following him and he stopped to see what the problem was. Everything ok, Love? he asked with a little concern.

Cyndora shook herself and moved up to where he waited. Sure. I was just looking around a sec. It’s not like the other orbitals, she commented thoughtfully.

Crineal glanced around him. Oh, I guess not. This is a Space Corps orbital. No frills here. Didn’t I tell you that all Orbital Threes are military?

Yes, I just hadn’t expected anything like this. She had remembered, but hadn’t considered that they would be any different. I’m used to the commercial ones I suppose. All of the people around them wore the black and silver of Space Corps; in fact as far as Cyndora could see she was the only one in civilian clothes.

As the two of them used an elevator to reach the upper beltway, Cyndora took the opportunity to have a better look at the concourse below. There were still shops, cafés and restaurants but they were functional more than anything. Most of the restaurants looked closer to mess halls with only a few nicer-looking establishments. There were no high fashion clothes shops either, just basic clothing stores. She actually felt disappointed at this failure of galactic society to be bright and shiny everywhere. Crineal had taken out his data-pad once more and was finally keying in their booking for passage on the Aztenka.
