    In April 2013, I stood in a room as the Clare Rose, having represented the county on a national and international level in a year that had seen me travel to various corners of the world, experiencing many once in a lifetime opportunities. To be asked to say a few words at a product launch - I could have done it in my sleep. But it was that incredibly emotional day that I was stopped in my tracks by the work of Rape Crisis Midwest.

    Sexual violence albeit physical, emotional or psychological is one of the most devastating of human experiences. The pain, terror, helplessness and humiliation involved results in severe distress which can impact every single aspect of ones life. Depression, suicide, self-harm, mental health disorder, fear, loneliness, eating disorders, anxiety and prolonged substance abuse are among the common effects of sexual violence on victims.

    According to the latest Rape Crisis statistics, almost 90% of abusers are known to their victims. A more terrifying statistic is that only 1 in 20 will report the assault. 47% of child sexual offenders were family members while 65% of child sexual abuse took place for a duration of years. I personally believe that there is not a family in Ireland who has not been affected in some way by sexual violence. Worryingly, they may not even realize it. Rape Crisis offers non directive, non-judgmental support and counselling to all survivors of sexual violence, men and women. They provide a light in the darkest of places. When there is no way out, when there is nowhere to go.

    Rape Crisis provides a wide range of support services including assistance with medical appointments, Garda liaison and accompaniment to Garda stations where desired. Over 20,000 hours of counselling and support are provided by centres every

    year, with over 2,500 people taking up counselling and support services per annum. On top of this, centres are committed to delivering an accurate evidence base, promoting awareness and prevention, supporting justice and securing law reform. In a world where there is no way out, they provide hope.

    With significant funding difficulties and temporary closures, centres rely heavily on volunteers to deliver their services. It is unfortunate that during tough economic times, incidences of domestic violence, rape and sexual violence are on an
