Why I wrote this journal…
I wrote a journal for my own use, for reflection, for an outlet, to help myself with my struggle with skin picking.
That was until a few weeks ago, when I heard that a kid I know was pulling out her eyebrows. That’s Trichotillomania or hair pulling. I know about it because I suffer from a related disorder, Dermatillomania or skin picking. Do her teachers know that it’s something serious, or could grow to be something serious? The kid must be in agony, confused, and unaware of what she’s doing or why she’s doing it. Somebody must help her figure it out before it gets any worse. She’s still young, around seven years old, surely she can be helped if only the people around her knew what it was.
Now I understand why awareness campaigns are important. When you’ve suffered through some ailment, you don’t want others to suffer it too if it can be helped. This one can be helped.
This journal is for the others who are hiding like me, for the clueless families, for the children who are just starting to show signs. I hope these reflections can somehow help them before it gets any worse.
