PREFACE
How many times in life do we knowingly or unknowingly meet teachers, angels, and / or growth opportunities? For years I have been going to a certain gas and go station and I guess you could say was somewhat oblivious to the man behind the counter.
Each visit the man behind the counter would go out of his way to call me by name and inquire of my life. And for some reason, for me, I seemed to be unconscious and / or preoccupied in the convenience store. After a couple years I began to take mental notes and can recall asking myself how many times in life do you meet such a cordial kind individual. Who unconditionally reaches out without fail?
I became curious and began over a period of time small talk. What was even more inspiring was that as I struggled to be present he was more than present in each exchange. Finally, we got into a deeper conversation and he asked about writing books. While discussing books he shared with me that he wanted to someday write one and without asking him the subject matter I encouraged him to pursue his dream.
Then one day he asked if we could meet to talk about his book. So we met in a greasy breakfast cafe every Thursday for months. The first meeting I was anticipating what the book was going to be about when he shocked me by telling me he was bi-polar. I must say that history flashed before my eyes of how endearing and kind the man behind the counter was while I struggled to reach out authentically.
"I want to write a book to help others understand. (Said the man behind the counter) Immediately I was touched with the feeling that this would be a great opportunity and privilege to make a new friend while he wrote his book.
Mental illness is real and can be serious. I made a new friend. I learned a lot from this new teacher in my life. And I got the opportunity to meet Christopher Cardon, The man behind the counter.
