Chapter one – The communication process
The last thing I'd learn, well into my career, was how to get on, how to say hello, how to get in with the audience
. Phyllis Diller
Communication is one of the most important skills needed in life. We need communication skills for the workplace, for friends and for our family. Unfortunately, poor communication can also be one of life’s biggest problems. When I ask the people of organizations I consult with about the biggest problems in their company, they usually say communication
.
Communication often breaks down because a person can’t regulate their thoughts becoming words. Many relationships are destroyed by a small sentence. Statements that are blurted out
can crush people and often aren't even the true feelings of the speaker.
Communication can be difficult for a variety of other reasons. Words have different meanings for different people. People code their messages so the real meaning is masked. People beat around the bush
. They say one thing when they have another agenda. People have trouble getting in touch with their feelings. Listeners are easily distracted and people only hear what they want to hear. Being a good communicator doesn't come naturally. It takes learning and trying out new behaviours.
Communication is a process
The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.- George Bernard Shaw
The reality of communication is that there is a lot of information and wisdom buried in the hearts and minds of people we communicate with and it takes and a process to draw it out.
Communication starts with what you think about saying. For example, you might think about saying "I need a rest after this period of activity.
