    People rarely give their best when they are not sure what they are expected to do. A team leader should therefore bring clarity to their team members by communicating two things.

    Firstly, they should communicate team vision or what the team is trying to achieve.

    Secondly they should clearly state how each person in the team contributes to the achievement of that vision. These two things bring clarity to each individual in the team.

    Chapter two: Sources of inspiration

    The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself and not to abandon it to his enemy. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

    If you do not have an inspiring organizational vision to communicate, then you can consider developing inspiration for your team’s vision from one of three sources.

    Firstly, you could establish the significance of what your team does. This is an inspiring statement of the importance of what your team is trying to achieve. This relates to how your team is helping the organization to achieve its vision or how you are helping your customers or society.

    Any job very well done that has been carried out by a person who is fully dedicated is always a source of inspiration. - Carlos Ghosn

    Secondly, consider setting standards of excellence. People find inspiration in doing their roles at high levels of excellence. There is no reason why your team can’t be best in the industry or world in its standards of excellence.

    Thirdly, people find inspiration in moral pursuits. That is, making the world a better place by what we do. For some teams, their jobs are morally inspirational because they are helping people or the environment or some
