Kolkata as we know it today the City of Joy... My home town, my birth place. My parents from India too. Having been brought up in a poor slum environment, my parents could not afford to give me a good education so I was sent to a boarding school where sponsors took care of my basic needs. It was a British boarding school called Dr. Grahams Homes in Kalimpong, Darjeeling. So I started my education as an infant and went right up to class 10. In those years a lot of good and bad things took place which in turn made me into a man . It was there that I received a good education and developed skills for life. After I left school I returned back to Kolkata, it was tough and I was finding it hard to adjust in a family environment after growing up in a boarding school with friends as your family. One fine day in the year 1991 I left for Nepal. Nepal is a good place for people who enjoy nature and its beauty... Mountains, rivers and beautiful landscape add so much to this phenomenal country. At first I came for a holiday, but fell in love with the place. So I decided to get a job and support my self. I started to work as a trainee teacher and still do my education to complete my further studies . I decided to take up Teacher’s training and become a Teacher. After couple of years I decided that I need to improve my social status and try and go abroad. Japan was a distant destination, however its the country I am currently living today and have been living here for the past 17 years. After living in Japan for the past 17 years, in between those years I have visited many countries like Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Honk Kong, Australia and many more. With this international exposure I have come across so many life long wonders, met wonderful people, listened to their stories and shared my world. Currently I am still a teacher and will always be a teacher.

感謝して

２００５年２月、まだ雪深い湯沢の、文字通り底冷えのする体育館には、笑い声が鳴り響いていました。湯沢の町の人々、――小 さな子どもたち、年配の方たち、そして縁あって湯沢に住んでいる外国の方たち、誰もが一様に、そこで展開される唄に、踊りに、そして楽しい英会話のゲーム に目をキラキラと輝かせていました。そして私も、２００４年１２月に発生したスマトラ島沖地震の被災者のために、メルビンさんと亜紀子夫人が企画したこの チャリティーイベントで、目を輝かせていた参加者の一人でした。

遥 か遠くの、日本の小さな雪国で、人々が集っていることをスマトラの人たちが知る由もないのです。ですがそんなことより、何か役にたてないだろうかという思 いで、みながこうして集まっていると思うと、なんとも不思議な感動を覚えました。そしてそれは誰かが苦しんでいる時に、楽しむのは後ろめたいと思いがち だったあの頃の私にとって、凝り固まった考えを一掃する、目から鱗の経験でもありました。現実に感謝して、楽しむことで、自然に国際協力や支援活動に関わ れることを、私はその時、このイベントを通して学びました。

これがこの本の著者である元気いっぱいのメルビンさんとの出会いで、メルビンさんはこのように、今できることで、又自分の信じることで、人を幸せの渦へと巻き込むおおらかさと、天性の溌剌さを持ち、その一方で、詩人としての深い静けさを併せ持つ人です。今回メルビンさんにとって、一冊目の詩集に次ぐ、二冊目の本となる『Light』 の翻訳を頼まれ、彼の今できること、信じることに、私も巻き込まれることになったわけですが、彼の「精神世界」を日本語に置き変えることは、なかなか大変 なことでした。しかし同時に、翻訳を学ぶ楽しみ、自分の内面と向き合う時間もいただきました。この本の『調和』にあるように、そう、苦の副産物、楽で帳尻 が合ったかなと思います。いただきものに感謝。

世 の中、つらいことが多いとは思いますが、帳尻を合わせることは、自分の心次第なのでしょう。なるほど、考えてみたら人生、全てがその法則で成り立っている ような気がします。そして自分の身の丈より思うに、まだまだ自分の人生に、修行の道ありかなと……。そう思うと人生、前に向かっていくことがとても楽しみ になりました。

さて、こんなふうに私も、ものの見事に、幸せの渦に巻き込まれてしまったわけです。追記的になりますが、メルビンさんの詩集『The Inner Me』 は原文、訳文共に素晴らしく、ぜひ、これからも詩を書いていただけたらと願わずにいられません。そして作者の願いと同様、そうメルビンさんご本人に、メル ビンさんのご家族に、また縁あってこの本を手にとられた皆様に、そしてこの私にも、一条の光がさして、あるべきところへ、あるべき姿となって向かっていけ ますようにと祈りを込め、初めての翻訳の旅を終えます。ありがとうございました。

When I first met Melvin at the Japanese school he was a shy guy who kept to himself. But I knew there was something more to him than his shyness that he was really good at.

So we became friends and then I realized his knowledge was far greater than his outward image and his shyness.

He always talked about helping people, and how can he help people. For a moment I thought he needed more help than anyone else because he was struggling to speak Japanese back in those days.

So after 3 years he published his first book of poems called 聽

The Inner Me .

His poems inspired me and gave me an inner depth into the man I started to look up to.

I could see his sadness and sorrows and yet I could see his happiness when he always came forward to help people.

He always volunteered to help people in the community, raised funds to send it to under developed countries. Raised money by bringing people together and organizing concerts.

His honesty gave me a sound faith in him and with that came a lot of respect.

His next book called LIGHT is an Inspiration book based on true facts. I hope this book helps people to understand life, follow a good path and be humble
