Chapter One: Introduction
Mrs. Warren’s Profession
by George Bernard Shaw was written in 1894. The first performance of the play took place in London in the year 1902.
The ‘profession’ in the title refers to prostitution.
Although the play was written in 1894, Britain’s theater censor, Lord Chamberlain, banned it because it was basically focused on the profession of prostitution. It was not allowed to be published.
Later in the year 1898, Mrs. Warren’s Profession
was eventually published in a collection of George Bernard Shaw’s play called Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant.
Finally, it was performed by the London Stage Society at New Lyric Club in London in the year 1902. The play was performed only for the members of the New Lyric Club.
The first public enactment of the play took place after more than thirty years of its writing. It was publicly performed in London in 1925.
On the other hand, Mrs. Warren’s Profession
opened in New Haven, CT and New York City, in the United States in 1905.
The first night performance of the play was completely sold out in New York. The American critics complained that it was an indecent play, but the play was sold out. Theater-goers bought the tickets for as much as thirty dollars per ticket.
In the United States, in New York, after the first performance of Mrs. Warren’s Profession
, the police arrested the house manager. The arrest was made on the charge of disorderly conduct. It was surprising that all the actors who had acted in the first performance of the play were ordered to appear in court.
The house manager and the actors were eventually acquitted, but the play was not allowed to continue after its first performance on the opening night.
Mrs. Warren’s Profession
has been revived on Broadway five times since its first
