Riding the train northwest to Giacomo’s brother’s house seems like adventure enough—Lori can hardly believe that it’s only the very first step. The jangle of the ticket-master’s keys fades as he stomps away down the aisle and through the doors into the next car. Lori can feel her insides quiver with the thrill of it!

Giacomo sits across from her on the train, looking happy as can be, beaming at her in the sun. Each time she looks at him she sees the wind from the open window stir the locks of dark hair above his golden forehead. Little beads of sweat collect where his eyebrows fade into the bridge of his nose, and she imagines licking the moisture away, tasting his salt, his warmth. She feels something completely indescribable: excitement, fear. Questioning her own sanity. Feeling blissful. Feeling lucky to be in this moment right now.

They hadn’t run away from school, exactly. In fact, when they told their teachers they wanted to go on a trip to the mountains, and potentially to Sicily (to visit the rest of Giacomo’s family), the teachers said, Aha! as if they were relieved to hear of it. They said, more or less: come back when you’re ready, don’t worry about tuition, we’ll work it out. They clapped Giacomo on the back, and beamed at Lori.
