Lori heads down to the garden with a list of things to gather, but since there is no rush, she lets herself wander, as if lost, amid the vegetables.

On her ample plot of land, Caterina grows all kinds of things: fat cabbages that look like they could be from a faerie tale, big lumpy-looking heirloom tomatoes of all colors and sizes, tender zucchini, strawberries, lettuces, kale, all kinds of cooking herbs and even some medicinal herbs, too, like angelica and calendula. The place is magical. The wind smells of sea and earth, and all the colors glimmer with an almost unearthly brightness.

Lori wanders up and down in the narrow paths between the meandering rows of vegetables. She’s wearing a loose cotton dress, the color of sun, and it catches the light and the wind. Her hair is knotted loosely at her neck. She brought a basket down with her to gather things—Caterina told her she’s in charge of the menu. What does she want to eat?

She bends to the ground and touches the bright orange folds of a zucchini flower and peeks under the leaves to see the fruits of this plant’s labor. She picks two green squashes and two yellow ones and places them in her basket. The sun is hot—gloriously hot—and the wind is fresh and delicious. She looks down at the things in her basket: basil, rosemary, green onions, zucchini…

Then suddenly, Lori’s lost in a dream-within-a-dream. For, since she and Giacomo arrived at Caterina’s, Lori has been feeling like she may be asleep. Everything is gorgeous, and fantastic, and delicious, and fruitful, and like paradise, really. She and Giacomo have made love almost every night, and her body has taken so much pleasure in his caresses.

She’s still marveling at how everything has unfolded. By a stroke of luck, she was seated next to Caterina on the plane ride to Italy, then Lori was promising to come stay with her. Now, true to her word, Caterina has been a fascinating new friend, teaching Lori tried-and-true techniques and secrets of her traditional cooking and baking. She had been incredibly hospitable, and of course she and Giacomo get along wonderfully, teasing each other and making Italian jokes Lori doesn’t understand, while Caterina dotes on him and he flatters her for her classical, aging beauty.

But it’s as if some kind of strange amnesia has overtaken Lori. Who is she? What happened before this? Where is she from?
